    Description

    The Engineering Technician performs technical level office and field duties in support of the engineering department, including researching, collecting, and analyzing data, reviewing plans and contracts, and other related engineering activities.

    Examples of Essential Duties:
    • Prepares, updates, and revises engineering maps and drawings related to capital improvement and other engineering projects.
    • Responds to requests for service and documentation related to assigned areas of responsibility; explains and interprets assignment area policies and procedures to internal and external customers.
    • Performs technical and paraprofessional duties including interpreting, analyzing, and determining compliance or acceptance of plans, information and materials.
    • Performs preliminary engineering design work and calculations, including preparation of plans, charts, diagrams, graphs, tables, and sketches.
    • Assists professional engineering staff in performing and conducting engineering and technical functions; performs data collection, research and analysis; prepares draft reports and technical documents; provides project oversight for less complex projects.
    • Establishes and maintains a wide variety of filing and related records utilizing the records management system; provides relevant information to relevant parties; prepares and types correspondence; compiles and types reports.
    • Checks calculations and estimates used in various projects including parcel maps, subdivision maps, District maps, and utility systems maps; prepares and processes various types of permits.
    • Performs engineering/mathematical calculations quickly and accurately to determine distances, area, volumes, grades, hydraulic flows, etc.
    • Calculates quantities and cost estimates for assigned projects; obtains vendor/contractor price quotes, drafts requisitions, and monitors materials and supplies necessary for assigned projects.
    • Performs various field work related to planning and verification of construction work, including visits to active construction sites, future construction sites, undeveloped sites, and existing District facilities.
    • Provides internal and external customers with information, such as legal descriptions of parcels, address verification, property ownership, assessor's parcel numbers, zoning designations, easements, flood zone designations, and public right-of-way.
    • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with other District employees, the public, and vendors/consultants.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.


    This is a temporary position that is limited to less than 960 hours per fiscal year and as such is not eligible for most benefits.

    Qualifications

    Experience:

    Two years of responsible technical engineering experience.

    AND

    Education:

    Equivalent to an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering/science, business, public administration, or a related field or equivalent college semester hours/credits. Two years of full-time engineering experience may be substituted for education requirement.

    License and/or Certificates :

    Valid Driver’s License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles and proof of good driving record as evidenced by the absence of multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years duration. The driving record will not contribute to an increase in the District’s automobile rates. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis

    Governance

    SSWD is a publicly owned and operated water utility regulated by the State of California Division of Drinking Water and State Water Code laws. The District is governed by a 5 member Board of Directors; each Director is elected by the voters within the Division that they represent. All expenses are financed through water service charges and connection fees.

    Water Supply

    SSWD provides water to its customers from 70 operational groundwater production wells. In addition, the District has contractual rights to 26,064 acre-feet from the City of Sacramento water entitlement; and a contract to purchase up to 29,000 acre-feet of surface water per year from Placer County Water Agency.
