DescriptionVacancy is in the Engineering and Architectural Division of the Public Works Department. Under administrative direction plans, directs, and reviews the planning, design and construction of new buildings and the operation, maintenance, repair and alteration of existing buildings and structures. Incumbent is responsible for architectural planning and makes final technical decisions on architectural problems. Prepares plans and specifications for special projects, supervises the drawing of preliminary and final plans, and inspects construction work for conformity to architectural plans. Supervises staff and assists staff with resolving difficult technical problems and acts as a final technical reference in all architectural problems of design and construction. Acts as a liaison for the City in relationships with consulting architects. Investigates existing structures to determine structural defects or required alterations and prepares reports and recommendations. Prepares cost estimates on proposed projects. Performs related work as required.
This is a non-union position. The hours of work for this position are 40 per week. The above salary includes 5% in lieu of overtime. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. Extensive knowledge of:- Methods, principles, and practices of architecture.
Through knowledge of: - Building construction, materials, and modern methods and techniques of building construction, modification, and repair.
Ability to: - Prepare complete architectural plans, specifications, estimates, schedules, and contracts for new buildings and for the modification and repair of existing buildings.
- Develop complete architectural layouts and to resolve difficult problems of design.
- Plan, assign and supervise the work of professional personnel engaged in architectural therefrom.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, architects, engineers, contractors, and the general public.
- Interpret plans and specifications to contractors and recognize departures therefrom.
Skills in: - Drawing architectural plans.
Qualifications Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in architecture
AND extensive experience (8-10 years) in the practice of architecture, including experience in architectural planning and design.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of License as a Registered Architect in the State of Connecticut
