    DESCRIPTION

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under general supervision, inspects and/or coordinates the inspection of major or complex heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for compliance with municipal regulations and other applicable laws; makes periodic maintenance inspections; investigates and reports on field problems and complaints; enters and updates information in land management system using a personal computer; consults with mechanical engineers, contractors, and owners on mechanical installation plans; assists in the development of code changes; conducts examinations of registered inspectors; keeps records and prepares routine and special reports; may schedule, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of inspectors; may act for the section head in his/her absence; and performs other related duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    All candidates must posses ICC/California/IAPMO certification as a Mechanical Inspector (proof required)*.

    AND meet one of the following options (A, B, or C):

    (Option A) Three years of recent full-time, paid experience equivalent to the duties performed by a Mechanical Inspector or Mechanical Supervisor. OR;

    (Option B) Four years of recent full-time, paid experience equivalent to the duties performed by a Building Inspector, Combination Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, or Plumbing Inspector. OR;

    (Option C) Five years of recent full-time, paid experience performing the duties of a journey-level Mechanical Installer/Contractor. OR;

    (Option D) Six years of experience in any combination of the above Items “A” through “C”.

    *Proof of required documents, such as licenses or certifications, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristics on the form. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate a field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to perform, plan and supervise the work associated with more complex mechanical inspections.
    • Able to use personal computers and other electronic devices to enter, retrieve, and update inspection data and permit information, send and receive emails, take and upload photos.
    • Able to work evenings, holidays, or weekends as required.
    • Proof of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection interview.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual skills in English/Spanish, English/Khmer, English/Tagalog is desirable for some positions.

    Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period.
