    Essential Job Functions

    A Safety Inspector is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:
    • Conducts a full range of field inspections to ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA standards such as confined space, respiratory protection, asbestos and lead.
    • Conducts field inspections to identify potential exposure to hazardous substances such as asbestos or lead requiring the use of a respirator or other personal protection devices.
    • Conducts and supervises work site and field monitoring inspections using air, sound, and other personal monitoring devices; researches and advises supervisors and managers on correct application of regulatory requirements such as respiratory protection, hearing conservation, ergonomics, asbestos, confined space, hazard communication, and other departmental safety programs.
    • Develops safety policies and procedures, and prepares and revises safety manuals.
    • Participates in various departmental, County accident review or safety committees.
    • Investigates serious accidents, inspects equipment involved, interviews witnesses, and reports findings to superiors and County Counsel, as necessary.
    • Represents the Department at meetings conducted by the County and other agencies including California Department of Occupational Safety Health (Cal/OSHA).
    • Uses computerized systems to maintain statistical records, writes reports, and prepares correspondence.


    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify:

    OPTION I: Two years of experience as a Safety Assistant. *

    OPTION II: Graduation with a bachelor's degree** from an accredited college with a specialization in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, physics, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field - and- one year of experience at the level of Safety Assistant*** in the areas of Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a closely related field. A master's degree** from an accredited college in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, physics, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.
    LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    *To qualify for option I, applicants must have County status as a Safety Assistant by holding or have held such payroll title for the required period of time.

    ***Experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Safety Assistant is defined as assisting in planning, conducting, coordinating, evaluating and maintaining a comprehensive occupational, environmental, and automotive safety program in a large department.     Physical Class:
    Physical Class III - Moderate: Job involves standing, walking, bending, lifting objects over 25 pounds, and working on irregular surfaces.

    MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    Part II: A Technical Writing Assessment, weighted 25%, measuring:
    • Professional/Technical knowledge of health and safety laws, federal and state regulations, and other occupational standards
    • Leadership
    • Written Communication
    • Work Skills

    Part III: Training & Experience (T&E) Evaluation, weighted 25%, measuring:
    • Experience in safety related activities
    • Experience performing tasks for an incident investigation
    • Experience conducting health and safety related presentations
    • Possession of current professional certifications and/or trainings

    The passing score for the assessments is 70% or higher on the combined score of Parts I, II, and III.
    Transfer of Test Components:
    If you recently took identical components for other exams, the test responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

    Test Preparation:
    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.
