    The Job

    THIS IS A FIRE DISTRICT POSITION ONLY

    This recruitment is only open to current San Bernardino County, Fire Protection District, or Special Districts employees who hold a regular, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, Work Experience Program (WEX), or intern position.

    County employment must be clearly listed in the work experience section of your application.

    The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District , Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) , is recruiting for a Hazardous Materials Technician III to assist professional and other staff in managing all types of hazardous waste and hazardous materials. Personnel in this classification perform inspections of hazardous waste storage and collection facilities and assists in assessment, sampling, and disposal activities, including transportation activities in the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and performs other duties as required.

    The current vacancy exists in HHW. The resulting eligible list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur in the HHW program.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Certificate: Must have successfully completed the 24-hour HAZWOPER and 8-hour DOT training classes.

    License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. Must obtain a Hazardous Materials Endorsement without air brakes restriction within six (6) weeks from the date of hire.

    Availability: Must be available to work on Saturdays as needed.

    Health and Physical Conditions: Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the health and physical conditions standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties established by the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District.
    Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    Minimum Requirements

    EDUCATION:
    Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of college coursework in biology, chemistry, physics or a closely related field from an accredited college.

    --AND--

    EXPERIENCE:

    Three (3) years of experience working full-time in a HHW program.
    Substitution: Two (2) additional years of experience may substitute for the required education.

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have completed the Hazardous Materials Technician A-D Series and possess strong technical skills and professionalism. They should have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to engage effectively with the public and coworkers. Experience with Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) waste is preferred, along with the ability to prepare and coordinate Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposals. Proficiency in spreadsheets and databases for tracking materials, inventory, and reporting is desired. In addition, the ideal candidate will be a proactive team player who fosters a positive, collaborative work environment, shares knowledge, supports coworkers, and ensures safe, compliant operations.
