Job Location: St. Louis District Office (Materials Department) - 1590 Woodlake Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63017
Why you’ll love this position: The assistant to the materials resident engineer supervises acceptance and engineering personnel in district office with large numbers of staff or in which complex projects requiring supervisory aid for the resident engineer are being performed; oversees one or more areas including sampling, testing, inspection, project documentation, and supporting contract administration of construction projects, as assigned. Responsibilities are performed under general supervision.
What you’ll do: - Supervises layout and inspection personnel including conducting performance management and scheduling and assigning work.
- Administers construction contracts for the assigned area.
- Interprets construction plans, specifications, and special provisions.
- Prepares or supervises preparation of project documentation, project reports, payment estimates, change orders, final plans and contractor performance reports, as assigned; reports progress of contractor payments.
- Communicates with contractors and property owners to resolve construction problems; prepares department responses to contractor claims.
Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university curriculum.
- Successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training exam.
- Six years of experience in highway or transportation engineering.
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification required within 90 days.
Special Working Conditions: - Job requires exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environmental conditions.
- This title requires advanced accreditation or licensure which is only available to holders of specific postsecondary degrees.
Examples of Work: - Supervises sampling and testing personnel including conducting performance management, scheduling, and assigning work.
- Provide guidance and support for construction contract set up on material acceptance for the district.
- Interprets construction plans, specifications, and special provisions.
- Prepares or supervises preparation of material documentation, reports, material summaries, and contractor performance reports, as assigned.
- Communicates with inspectors, contractors, and suppliers to resolve material acceptance problems; prepares department responses to contractor or supplier claims.
- Disseminates material information to Construction Division, contractors, suppliers, and district staff.
- Provides technical expertise and material input and training for each section.
- Manages functions of the materials office as assigned; may include responsibility for staffing, fleet vehicles, and acquisition and maintenance of equipment.
- Performs field checks to evaluate materials on construction sites.
- Investigates material problems and conveys information to the resident engineer to aid negotiation of acceptance and/or cost changes.
- Performs Independent Assurance Sampling to ensure technicians follow proper testing procedures.
- Performs supervisory responsibilities in a manner consistent with the department's EEO policies.
- Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
