    Description

    The City of Laguna Beach is excited to announce an opening for the position of Environmental Technician in the Public Works and Utilities Department’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division! In this role, you’ll support the implementation of the City’s environmental and sustainability programs, with a focus on waste reduction, recycling, organics diversion, and public outreach. This is a hands-on position that includes both fieldwork and administrative responsibilities to help ensure compliance with state mandates like SB 1383.

    Examples of Duties

    The normal duties for this position can be found in the job description for Environmental Technician . These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
    • Conducting field inspections to monitor compliance with SB 1383 and other recycling mandates
    • Assisting in organizing and staffing compost giveaways, cleanup events, and outreach booths
    • Preparing and distributing educational materials and social media content
    • Collecting, tracking, and entering program data for state reporting and compliance
    • Responding to public inquiries and coordinating service responses with contractors
    • Supporting communication with the City’s waste hauler and partner agencies
    • Representing the City at community meetings and events
    • Providing support to higher-level professional staff on reporting and program coordination


    Qualifications

    Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

    Education: A high school diploma and equivalent supplemented by college-level coursework in environmental studies, public administration, sustainability, or a related field is required. A Bachelor’s Degree is desirable.

    Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of experience in environmental services, solid waste, recycling, or a sustainability program is required. Municipal or government experience is preferred.

    License/Certificate Requirements: Certification related to solid waste, recycling, or sustainability (e.g., SWANA, CRRA) is desirable.

    Supplemental Information

    This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies in the same or lower classifications.

Applications will be screened carefully, and selected applicants will be invited to participate in the Structured Panel Interview. The appointing hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions. The selection process may be modified based on the needs of the City.

    Pre-employment Process:

    Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice. Education and employment verification and reference check(s) will also be conducted.
