    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    We are actively seeking a Mechanic IV (Body Shop) who can perform scheduled & unscheduled body/unibody and frame repairs. These include modifications and fabrication on equipment as well as related services to various types of vehicular equipment.

    The purpose of the Mechanic IV (Body Shop) position is to be well versed throughout all collision repair areas. Direct repair of vehicles and determine timeliness, efficiency, and best practice procedures according to industry standard, flat rates, and quality controls. Serves as a shop leader/trainer and oversees/guides diagnostic and repair work of lower-level mechanics.

    The Mechanic IV (Body Shop) duties will include but are not limited to:
    • Performs all phases of frame diagnosis and repairs using electronic measuring system and unibody & chassis dimension and specification charts.
    • Refurbishes units including complete interior disassembling, upholstery and detailing to return unit to like new condition.
    • Uses frame machine and floor system pulling towers.
    • Keeps track of repair times electronically in M5 and orders parts as needed.
    • Prepares and paints vehicles using HVLP technology.
    • Welds and brazes all ferrous and nonferrous metals. Uses Mig welder on all metals and aluminum. Uses plastic welder and UniSpotter.
    • Uses all body repair tools including sanders, buffers and door skin tools. Uses all related safety gear/equipment.
    • Performs estimates when needed.
    • Stays abreast of current/new technology relevant to the position.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.

    ADDITIONAL SALARY INCENTIVES ASE/EVT CERTIFICATION PAY (UP TO $5,200 ANNUALLY)

    EVENING/NIGHT SHIFT INCENTIVE PAY (UP TO $3,000 ANNUALLY)

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.

    This is a FLEET Management Department Position at the Tier I Level.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    High school degree of GED equivalent.

    Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals; mechanical diagrams; safety, and hazardous materials communications.

    Advanced math and computer skills required. Excellent problem-solving skills.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    Seven-year experienceof automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required.

    An Associate’s degree (at least 18-month program) in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology plus, five-year equivalentof automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

    Valid Texas Class C upon hire. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

    Must achieve certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment.

    May be required to achieve Emergency Vehicle Technician certification.

    May require mobile air (EPA 609) certification.

    Aptitude test may be required.

    PREFERENCES

    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

    Preference will be given to applicants with light or heavy vehicle collision repair experience. ASE Master Certification in body repair or ICar is a highly preferred. Aluminum body substructure repair experience in ambulance modules is highly desired. Fire Apparatus and general fiberglass body repair experience is preferred. Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.

    SALARY INFORMATION

    Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary range for this position is:

    Pay Grade 21
