    The Position

    Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting.

    Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.

    The Nevada Department of Corrections is recruiting for a Correctional Nurse 1 underfilling a Correctional Nurse 2 to be located at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. They will work under the supervision of Correctional Nurse 3 and will consult with them on a regular basis. The incumbent will provide professional nursing care to inmates by identifying patient health care needs; making comprehensive clinical observations/evaluations of health needs; and record/reporting indicative signs/symptoms of physical and mental conditions. Responsibilities include conducting sick calls for inmates with medical complaints; identifying inmates requiring immediate medical treatment; obtaining physician's orders for treatment; preparing and maintaining reports/audit charts. Nurses are responsible for maintaining safety, health and wellbeing of inmates in the therapeutic environment; assist in physically restraining hostile or combative patients; coordinate and schedule outside medical appointments for inmates; and arrange for transportation to exterior medical appointments. *** THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) License as a Registered Nurse and one year of professional nursing experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of employment. Probationary employees must successfully complete "pre-service" training (PST) provided by the department. As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and must work various hours and/or shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Some positions require a valid driver's license at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
