    Introduction

    THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL EXAM - YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY

    Qualified applicants must be current county employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Friday, August 29, 2025. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments. Applications and supplemental questionnaires must be submitted online before the filing deadline of 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

    DESCRIPTION

    THE POSITION
    Under direction, to investigate violations of laws; or, to supervise an assigned detail of subordinates in routine patrol activities, in detention and corrections duties, in civil process duties, or in varied criminal justice assignments; or, to coordinate emergency services preparedness programs and volunteer activities; and to do related work as required.

    This class represents the first level of supervision or specialist in the peace officer series. Positions in this class are usually assigned duties in supervising subordinates assigned to all divisions of the Department; and carrying out criminal, juvenile or department administrative investigations or performing extradition duties involving the transport of prisoners from other jurisdictions. Sergeants also train new employees in law enforcement techniques, in detention and corrections operations, in investigative procedures, in civil process, and in other areas of criminal justice assignments. Duties typically involve operating within well-defined departmental or legal procedures and include responsibility for supervision and evaluation of subordinate performance. Sergeants are responsible for assigning and training of staff and inspections of personnel, facilities, equipment and vehicles at their assigned duty stations. This class differs from the next higher class of Lieutenant by the latter having more extensive authority in the execution of administrative powers. Lieutenants generally serve as Watch Commanders or Unit Commanders. Sergeants differ from the lower class of Deputy Sheriff II by the Sergeant being a first-line supervisory class.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience:

    Candidates must have completed their probationary period as a member of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and possess the following:

    Either I

    The equivalent of three years’ full-time continuous experience as a Deputy Sheriff I/II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

    Or II

    The equivalent of five years’ full-time California law enforcement experience, which must include a minimum of two years as a Deputy Sheriff I/II in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and possession of an Advanced Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

    License:

    Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

    Special Requirement:

    Federal law and County policy requires that certain positions in the class of Sergeant which require a commercial driver's license, and the performance of duties defined as "safety sensitive" are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.

    NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

    EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

    The examination will consist of the following steps:

    Examination Recruitment Bulletin Release: Friday, August 8, 2025

    All applications must be filled out according to the instructions. Applications that are not fully completed or not completed following the instructions listed will not be considered. Resumes in lieu of properly filled out applications will not be considered. Only applications submitted electronically, via the County's online application system, by the final file date will be accepted. Be aware that if you only complete an application template and fail to submit it to apply for this position, your application will not be accepted.

    Final Filing Date for Applications: Friday, August 29, 2025, at 5:00 PM

    Review for Minimum Qualifications: Completed by Friday, September 12, 2025.

    During this time, applications will be reviewed to verify minimum qualifications as stated in the bulletin. All applicants will receive an email notification regarding the results of the application review before the end of the week.

    Written Examination: Thursday, October 9, 2025, and/or Friday, October 10, 2025.

    A written test which will be qualifying only (pass/fail). Applicants who pass the written test will move forward to the next step of the examination process, an assessment center.

    Candidate Orientation: Monday, October 20, 2025, at 2:00 PM

    This orientation provides applicants information on the upcoming assessment center. Although not mandatory, applicants are encouraged to attend the orientation. Note: Only applicants who pass the written examination will move on to the assessment center.

    Assessment Center: Week of November 3, 2025.

    Applicants who pass the written examination will be invited to participate in an assessment center. The assessment center score will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score.

    Veterans’ Preference
    Each applicant entitled to veterans’ preference as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules who has served in the armed forces of the United States during a war or campaign as defined by Section 1897 of the Government Code of the State of California and who has been discharged or released under honorable conditions and wishes to claim such preference shall do so by presenting proof of his/her honorable discharge (DD214) from the armed forces of the United States, showing the dates of his/her military service. Each applicant entitled to Disabled Veterans’ points as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules, who wishes to claim such preference shall additionally present proof of military-connected disability from the United States Veterans Administration.

    U.S. military veterans (including applicants already employed by the County of Alameda) intending to claim preferential consideration pursuant to Alameda County Civil Service Rules must present proof of honorable discharge or release (DD Form 214) concurrent with this application but in no event later than the final step in the recruitment process (usually the oral interview.)

    To claim veteran’s preference, proof must be presented during check in on the date of the applicant’s scheduled oral interview. Failure to submit proof by this date will forfeit the applicant's claim to veterans' preference in such examination.

    Alameda County, California, was established in 1853. The County was created from the territory of two counties created in 1850: Contra Costa and Santa Clara. It was given the local name for the region, Alameda, which translated loosely as "a grove of poplars."
