POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATIONThe Private Swimming Lesson Instructor position is responsible for teaching swimming lessons to participants of various ages and skill levels in an individualized setting. This position isassigned to classes through the City’s swimming lesson program based on availability, needs, and skills. Thisposition requires working evenings, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to travel to work at all City facility pools as needed.Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.
The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:- Demonstrate knowledge of effective swimming instruction
- Instruct swimming classes for students of various age groups and ability levels
- Demonstrate treading water, diving, front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly stroke in a proficient manner (minimum of 10 yards)
- Demonstrate knowledge of American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program
- Demonstrate knowledge of first aid procedures common in swimming pool operations
- Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations by making proper judgment as to the correct course of action
- Acquire and maintain nationally recognized First Aid and CPR certifications within six (6) months of hire
- Acquire and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within six (6) months of hire
- Work courteously with the public and support the City of Westminster guest service philosophy and SPIRIT values (Service, People, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Teamwork)

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks 1. Provides quality swim lesson instruction to individuals of various age groups and ability levels
2. Demonstrates front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly stroke correctly to participant (minimum of 10 yards)
3. Provides a safe and educational experience for participant
4. Maintains ongoing records of activity levels and usage of swimming lessons, and completes evaluative report cards prior to the last class
5. Follows department guest service philosophy
6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Other Duties and Responsibilities 1. Attends scheduled staff meetings, in-services and trainings
2. Responds appropriately to emergencies
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required :- Must be at least 16 years of age
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification within six (6) months of hire
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within six (6) months of hire
- Must demonstrate complete understanding of the progression of skills necessary to be successful as an instructor, through multiple sessions of teaching individual lessons and/or demonstration or lesson audit
Preferred :- Experience teaching children in a classroom or recreation setting
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements - Work performed is physical in nature and involves sufficient physical strength and stamina for:
- Constant submersion in the water while lessons are being taught and occasional sitting, standing, and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons during swimming classes
- Constant near and far acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant hearing to be aware of troubled individuals that may be out of line of sight
- Occasional lifting of ten (10) pounds from floor to overhead to move equipment and supplies; occasional lifting of up to seventy-five (75) pounds from floor to chest to assist in moving furniture, equipment, and patrons on backboards
- Occasionally push and/or pull seventy-five (75) pounds to remove individuals from pool area in an emergency situation, and set up bleachers for events and lane ropes for lap swim
WORKING CONDITIONSFrequent exposure to pool water. Occasional lifting up to seventy-five (75) pounds and the possible lifting of an injured individual. Frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions. High public contact position requiring adequate spoken interaction with the public and pool guests. Ability to work in a high humidity and heat environment for long periods.
Required Materials and Equipment Personal floatation devices, kick boards, pull buoys, and other assorted pool toys and learning devices.
