ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Clark County Information Technology Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Senior Systems Operator position. This lead/specialist role within the computer systems operations series is responsible for managing multiple large-scale systems in a centralized data center. As a Senior Systems Operator, you will provide lead direction and mentorship to Systems Operators. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing training plans for new Systems Operators and be continuously involved in improving efficiency of operations work processes.
This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by certificate of completion from a technical training program in computer operations AND four (4) years of full-time experience in operating large-scale computer equipment. All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.

Working Conditions: Work scheduled off-hours shifts.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Provides lead direction, training and work review to a shift of a large-scale mainframe and mid-range systems operators in a multiprocessing environment; organizes and assigns work, sets priorities, and follows-up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work.
- Provides input into selection, evaluation, disciplinary and other personnel matters; may sign evaluation forms and counsel employees as required.
- Operates and controls large-scale computers for batch or on-line processing; monitors and maintains system status; monitors teleprocessing operations and ensures that such operations are effectively accomplished.
- Operates and monitors master system consoles; reviews operators' logs to determine system and equipment status, jobs to be finished on subsequent shifts, maintenance and repair services due, etc.; reviews job schedule and ensures that all jobs are completed successfully.
- Plans, implements and maintains network connections to the mainframe system; instructs users in network system access and usage.
- Diagnoses, troubleshoots, reports and resolves interruptions or problems in processing, software or hardware; fixes minor problems with Job Control Language; contacts supervisor or calls for service as appropriate.
- Replaces ink cartridges ribbons on printers, cleans typeface, loads paper and special forms and adjusts printers, cleans tape drives and performs related minor maintenance on peripheral equipment.
- Monitors and maintains a large integrated heterogeneous communications network; provides support to network end-users; troubleshoots network problems; assists operator in troubleshooting more complex network problems; installs modems, installs data circuits and ensure proper access to the mainframe system.
- Verifies that inputs and outputs are complete before releasing from the computer area.
- Monitors the computer room equipment and environment and follows procedures for required or corrective action.
- Monitors on-line systems and responds to inquiries from on-line computer customers; may serve as a help desk specialist, depending upon hours of assignment.
- Operates decollating, bursting, printing and related support equipment; maintains stocks of papers and forms and distributes output as required.
- Monitors multiple environmental equipment to maintain a temperature and secure controlled physical environment conducive to a large data center installation.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSMobility to work in a typical office setting or controlled, below-normal temperature and use standard office equipment, strength to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds, stamina to move about to operate multiple peripheral equipment and respond to multiple console requests and to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
