The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) is seeking dedicated professionals to join Cal/OSHA as Associate Safety Engineers (Chemical – North). Based in Concord, CA, this journey-level role is part of the Process Safety Management (PSM) Unit and is responsible for ensuring worker safety at high-hazard chemical facilities. ASEs conduct independent inspections, accident investigations, and consultations to protect California’s workforce and communities.
As an Associate Safety Engineer (ASE), you will independently perform the full range of professional safety engineering duties for Cal/OSHA’s PSM Unit. Key responsibilities include:
Conducting Program Quality Verification (PQV) inspections at chemical plants, ammonia-refrigeration units, and other covered facilities.
Investigating accidents and identifying hazards to ensure compliance with California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5189.
Providing technical consultations to employers and employees regarding workplace safety and hazard prevention.
Preparing detailed reports, making recommendations, and participating in hearings as needed.
Supporting Cal/OSHA’s mission to protect worker health and safety across the state.

Education/Experience: Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications outlined in the Associate Safety Engineer Exam Bulletin.
Knowledge of: Principles of safety engineering, industrial hygiene, and process safety management; CCR Title 8, Section 5189; Cal/OSHA safety laws and regulations.
Skills in: Conducting inspections, accident investigations, hazard analysis, report writing, and technical communication.
Other Requirements: Must be eligible through an employment list, transfer, or reinstatement. Candidates new to State service will be hired at the minimum of the salary range ($9,713/month).
