Consider working as an Accounting Technician for Nevada County within the Treasurer Tax Collector's Office. We are seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Accounting Technician. This is an experienced level position in which individuals perform a variety of technical accounting duties in support of the County Tax and Treasury operations.
As an Accounting Technician, you will:
- Handle monetary transactions (cash and checks) including posting transactions for customers and issuing receipts
- Perform detail-oriented work and ensure mandated deadlines are met
- Apply your strong knowledge of accounting practices and principles to perform billing, collection, reporting and accounting of property tax, transient occupancy tax (TOT), and cannabis tax programs
- Prepare bank reconciliations, record and reconcile investment transactions, reconcile interest earnings, perform daily balancing of the Treasury
- Work with multiple software platforms including property tax software, remittance processing software, banking software, investment tracking software, and TOT software. This position uses Microsoft Excel extensively, and proficiency is required
- Apply and implement County, State and Federal regulations, policies and procedures to ensure accounts are maintained properly
- Prepare periodic and special reports and correspondence
- Help increase operational efficiencies within the department
- Collaborate with team members to update accounting procedures
- Support and contribute to the department’s fiscal planning and management
An Accounting Technician is an integral part of the staff in the Treasurer Tax Collector's Office of Nevada County whose mission is to fulfill the duties and responsibilities set forth by law while providing responsive, courteous, consistent, and efficient service equitable to all taxpayers. This position is crafted for experienced individuals who have graduated from high school plus courses in accounting or financial record-keeping, from an accredited college or university. Four years of progressively responsible experience in sophisticated financial or statistical record-keeping is also needed. Furthermore, individuals are required to have at least two years’ experience at the level equivalent to Nevada County's classification of Senior Accounting Assistant.

Knowledge and Skills Required: Knowledge of: - Federal, state and county laws, rules and regulations pertaining to accountability of funds and payroll
- Accounting principles and practices, governmental accounting and budgetary record keeping requirements
- Basic public agency payroll processes, including interpretation of various agreements with employee organizations
- Business data processing and data entry systems relating to accounting technical support work
- Business arithmetic, including percentages, decimals, and basic bookkeeping
- Correct English usage including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Office methods, practices and procedures
Skill in: - Performing difficult and complex statistical or record keeping work involving use of considerable amount of judgement, speed and accuracy
- Performing accurate arithmetic calculations and financial reconciliations
- Explaining and applying accounting practices and principles within the guidelines of applicable laws, rules, and regulations
- Preparing clear and concise payroll, financial or statistical statements and reports
- Reviewing and verifying the accuracy of financial data and information and ensuring appropriate authorizations are obtained
- Developing forms, records, systems and procedures
- Directing the work of others
- Operating office equipment including computers, printers, photocopiers, scanners and calculators
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Education and Experience Required
- Completion of twelfth grade or possession of a GED AND at least two years of experience at the level equivalent of Nevada County's classification of Senior Accounting Assistant.
- Alternately, possession of an Associate degree from an accredited college or university, in accounting, business or related field, plus one year of experience at the level equivalent of Nevada County's classification of Senior Accounting Assistant is equivalent.
- A candidate with a Bachelor degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related degree from an accredited college or university is qualifying.
