    Job Description:


    Purpose:

    Under minimal supervision, this position performs complex work including installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in Department of Aviation (DOA)-owned and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) facilities.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Leads in the installation, maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and diagnosis of HVAC systems, building automation system (BAS) network devices and components, and other equipment and infrastructure at and between the BAS center and remote sites.
    • Performs complex service and preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment and components including pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, and other mechanical systems in 24/7 commercial and remote AUS facilities.
    • Plans, organizes, and performs activities in the completion of assigned work orders including making materials ready and performing calibrations, maintenance, repairs, and testing of HVAC equipment and systems.
    • Repairs rooftop package DX systems using bucket truck and aerial man lifts.
    • Maintains and enters records of repairs, calibrations, and tests in the asset management system (AMS).
    • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs chiller controls/safety circuits and refrigerant circuits on multi-stage chillers, air conditioning systems, ice machines, and other equipment.
    • Services Aircraft Support Equipment PC air units, chilled and heating hot water units, ice machines, thermal storage tanks, chillers, and boilers.
    • Designs and installs heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment and systems.
    • Installs and maintains digital and analogue automation control system components; mounts compressors and condensers; cuts, bends, and joins tubing; connects electrical wiring; injects Freon; fits pipes; installs thermostats; etc.
    • Coordinates maintenance, repairs, and system outages with AUS facility users during outages.
    • Ensures all systems comply with all Federal, State, City, and Local regulations, policies, procedures, and ordinances.
    • Monitors the AMS, provides quality assurance review of maintenance and repair activities, and provides updates to work order database.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, controls, and components.
    • Knowledge of occupational hazards, OSHA, and other applicable safety rules and regulations, including when working with energized equipment.
    • Knowledge of tools, materials, and methods used in maintenance and repair of ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems.
    • Knowledge of applicable building codes.
    • Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory as it applies to relays and control devices.
    • Skill in using hand tools common to the HVAC trade.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in accurately reading instruments and meters and making accurate instruments recordings.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Skill in estimating time, materials, and costs.
    • Skill in using computers and related software.
    • Skill in problem solving.
    • Skill in conducting routine inspections for the purpose of determining conformity to ASHRAE, building codes, and safety standards.
    • Skill in tracing and analyzing causes of HVAC troubles and making repairs.
    • Skill in performing emergency and routine repairs and maintenance.
    • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams and technical instructions.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces where there is limited or restricted means of entry and exit.
    • Ability to test and calibrate instruments and make precise and close tolerance repairs and adjustments.
    • Ability to wear anti-fall (SRL) body harness for confined space entry or working from aerial man lifts or bucket truck.
    • Ability to acquire, through training and on-the-job experience, specialized knowledge in rapidly changing technology and applications.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in repair and maintenance of commercial/industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or refrigeration systems with chillers, including two (2) years of experience which were in the Aviation, Military, Industrial, Commercial Construction, or other large-scale commercial or utility infrastructure environments.
    • Completion of accredited training in air conditioning and refrigeration systems may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    • Valid State of Texas Class “C” Driver License.
    • EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification.
    • Valid State of Texas Certified Air Conditioning Technician License.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Current Type III EPA-608 Refrigerant Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.


    Notes to Candidate:

    This position will be responsible for the following:

    Provide advanced troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation services for heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration systems. Responsible for ensuring optimal indoor air quality, pressurization, and operational efficiency across various systems, including chilled water and hot water heating systems. Serve as a facilitator for Energy Management System (EMS) repairs and act as a backup for Central Plant Operators. Troubleshooting and Repair Diagnose and repair complex HVAC and refrigeration system issues. Repair and replace electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration components. Address problems in chilled water and heating hot water systems. Perform operational adjustments to ensure system efficiency. Preventive and Corrective Maintenance Conduct routine inspections of HVAC systems and components. Replace filters, lubricate parts, adjust belt tension, and replace bearings. Maintain ventilation and air conditioning systems to ensure consistent performance. Installation and Modification Install and modify HVAC equipment and components, including: Air handlers Supply and return ducts Compressors, Coils and fans. Upgrade or retrofit existing systems for improved energy efficiency or functionality. Building System Support Maintain and improve building indoor air quality and air pressurization. integrate and troubleshoot HVAC components with Building Automation Systems (BAS). Assist in managing and repairing Energy Management Systems (EMS). Serve as a backup to Central Plant Operators, supporting plant operations when required.

    Salary: $29.23-36.54

    Driving Requirement:

    This position requires a Valid State of Texas Class “C” Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    This position must travel between various locations as part of the regular job duties, and the individual will be required to drive a city vehicle. Position will also be required to drive on the AOA. Successful candidate must be in possession of a Texas driver's license as authorized by the Texas Transportation Code. A driving record verification will be conducted.

    Skills Assessment:

    A skills assessment/s will be required for this position.

    Work Hours:

    Sunday-Wednesday 4:00 AM-2:30 PM

    Wednesday-Saturday 4:00 AM-2:30 PM

    Hours may change according to departmental needs; work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekend work.
