Communicates project and program information to internal and external customers through presentations, reports, tours, instructional videos, and technical training. Compiles, analyzes, interprets, and develops informational and educational materials. Prepares necessary reports and documents for support of projects and programs. Maintains technical awareness of internal and external business issues at it relates to area of responsibility. Represents Department or Division by interacting with various boards, commissions, special interest groups, outside organizations, and other City Departments and Divisions. Trains, coordinates, and supervises the work of volunteers. Responds to requests from the media. Evaluates projects, programs, and performance measures and criteria. Assists in the development of short-and long-range plans for projects and programs. Reviews and interprets policies, codes, regulations, and ordinances. Assists in the development of departmental and divisional processes and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to Environmental Science, Life Science, Natural Science, plus two (2) years of experience in a related field. Experience may substitute for education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
- Master's degree may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:None.
Preferred Qualifications:- Teaching experience (as a formal or informal educator).
- Training and field experience in environmental science and/or teaching outdoors.
- Bilingual (Spanish)
- Experience working with students with special needs.

What does the Watershed Protection Department do? POSITION OVERVIEW:The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department is looking for an environmental educator to teach our Earth Camp program for 5th graders (www.austintexas.gov/earthcamp) and assist with our other youth education programs (www.austintexas.gov/watershed/YouthEd). This work involves teaching outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Field sites could include creeks, parks, hiking trails, caves, gardens, and schools. This position will involve communicating project and program information to internal and external customers, interpreting and creating educational materials, and assisting in the development of short- and long-range plans for projects and programs. Essential duties involve teaching students and the public about watersheds, the Edwards Aquifer, flood safety, and actions people can take to improve water quality in our creeks and springs; communicating with priority stakeholders; gathering input from the community; providing information and resources to the community; organizing/maintaining/transporting/loading/unloading educational supplies/resources; driving to various sites around Austin; and representing the Department at community events.

Days and Hours:20 hours per week, generally occurring between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. M-TU and 8:30 a.m. - 2:30p.m. on W-TH, with the ability to telework (up to 60% of time worked) when conducting work that does not require being in person. Exceptions may apply subject to the business needs of the department.
Salary Range:$24.08 - $27.93, depending on qualifications and experience.
