    A Water Systems Sampler job is available with City of Fort Worth Water Department, Central Water Laboratory. A Water Systems Sampler performs a variety of technical duties involved in the sampling and biological/chemical analysis of water and wastewater quality. Collects and analyzes samples from the City's distribution system including well sites and reservoirs to ensure water quality compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

    This is a full-time position that supports the laboratory's mission of providing accurate, responsive and cost-effective analytical and technical services to all areas of the community. The Water Systems Sampler is responsible for fieldwork such as sampling and biological/chemical analysis of water and wastewater quality. This position requires routine weekend and holiday work. A Water Systems Sampler works a day shift schedule, but additional off-hours work schedules may be required for emergencies and holidays.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in chemistry, biology, or a related field and one year of water treatment or laboratory experience
    • One (1) year of water treatment or laboratory experience
    • Valid Texas Driver's License
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a TCEQ Class D Water Operator License will be required within twelve (12) months of hire.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain a TCEQ Class C Surface Water Treatment Operators License will be required within three (3) years of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in a municipal or environmental water and wastewater laboratory
    • Experience in laboratory QA/QC requirements

    The Water Systems Sampler job responsibilities include:
    • Performs procedures such as collect water samples for bacteriological and chemical analysis from designated water storage, production, or collection sites. Performs a variety of standard field tests for chlorine residual and other water quality factors.
    • Prepares solutions and reagents for various chemical analyses. Provides input regarding operational treatment processes. Monitors disinfection by-products, turbidity, inorganic and organic chemicals and analyzes chemical lab tests. Calibrates analytical equipment including pH meters, turbidimeters, and spectrophotometers.
    • Conducts routine laboratory analysis for quality and process control. Assists in responding and resolving customer complaints concerning water quality and notifies proper personnel. Conducts field investigations and site visits.
    • Reviews and interprets peer and self-generated data for accuracy and completeness.
    • Compiles and prepares accurate records for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Maintains log records of all equipment including motor vehicles.
    • Maintains safety of environmental hazards in compliance with local, state and federal regulations, including chemical and sample custody, storage and disposal; prevents pollution; and minimized waste production.
    • Participates in internal and external audits. Facilitates auditor with requested information and documentation; and submits analysis of proficiency testing samples both internally and externally.
    • Works to continually enhance knowledge and skills. Attends quality control and safety training. Performs other related duties as required.

    Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases and workspace restrictions.

    Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.

    Medical Program

    The city’s Healthy Challenge Wellness Program rewards all full-time, benefit-eligible employees on the city’s health insurance. The Healthy Challenge Program utilizes a points system. Participants may earn points throughout the year (Jan. 1-Dec. 15) for completing specific program activities and participants can redeem points at the end of the year for a cash reward.
