    The City of Austin, Building Services Department is hiring a Facility Service Specialist - Security Systems. This important position is key to ensuring the smooth operation of critical physical security system in city-owned facilities.

    As a Security Systems Specialist, you'll apply your technical expertise to maintain, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs on access control systems, surveillance camera, and other low-voltage security equipment. You'll collaborate with internal teams to ensure swift responses to maintenance requests and coordinate major system installation and repairs with vendors. Additionally, you'll track and maintain work orders, resolve invoice discrepancies, and manage licensing requirements with city and county offices.

    Job Description:

    Purpose:

    This position is responsible for providing maintenance and repairs to assigned buildings, including coordination of internal maintenance personnel or contractor vendors.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Plans and performs basic building repairs and participates in construction/installation activities on assigned projects.
    • Conducts site inspections and reports on maintenance needs and safety violations.
    • Coordinates with contractors, vendors, and other divisions providing maintenance, repairs, and moves to assigned buildings.
    • Calculates figures and compiles data and information for reports, cost estimates, etc.
    • Prepares and maintains status reports on projects.
    • Monitors lease agreements, maintenance contracts, equipment installation contracts, and construction contracts.
    • Researches information as requested or needed.
    • Answers questions from internal and external customers.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of facility maintenance.
    • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.
    • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.
    • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
    • Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
    • Knowledge of general maintenance practices.
    • Knowledge of monitoring of contracts and/or vendors.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Ability to coordinate contract work crews providing maintenance and repairs to a variety of building sites.
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years relevant work experience.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to the maximum of four (4) years.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • Class C Driver License.
    • If required by position: Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL). Specific endorsements may be required to be obtained within 120 days of hire.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to bend, lift, walk, carry, or use a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing security systems including alarms, surveillance cameras, and access control systems.
    • Experience testing and adjusting system components to ensure they are working correctly.
    • Experience identifying and troubleshooting systems issues and carrying out necessary repairs.
    • Maintaining an inventory of equipment and ordering necessary supplies.
    • Knowledge of various security systems and programming software.
    • Experience documenting all install, maintenance, and repair activities for record purposes.
    • Knowledge of electrical and electronic components and tools.
    • Experience responding to emergency calls for systems malfunctions and carrying out immediate repairs.


    Notes to Candidate:

    Days and Hours:
    Monday through Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position is Non-Exempt.
    Evening, weekend, holiday work, & callback may be required. Hours may vary depending on work demands and business needs.

    Work Location: Rutherford Lane Campus (RLC) - 1520 Ruthford Ln, Austin

    Salary: $27.77 - $33.95

    Driving Requirement:
    • This position requires a Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.


    Essential/Critical Employee Designation:
    • Some positions are designated as Critical or Essential. Employees in these roles are required to report to work during emergencies or when operations are modified. This may include working from a designated site or an alternative work location.


    Work Conditions:
    • Work hours may vary based on operational needs and may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments.
    • Must have the ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
    • A skills assessment may be required as part of the hiring process.


    Veteran Preference:
    • Veteran candidates must provide a copy of their DD-214 at the interview to receive the veteran’s preference.

    City Government
