    The Division

    The Community Services Division (CSD) e mpower s and support s residents, schools, and local organizations to make the city more livable, safe and clean. CSD is comprised of three core service program areas - BeautifySJ , Grantmaking for Community Impact, and Youth Intervention Services. Overseen by a Deputy Director and two Division Managers, there ar e 1 61 full-time equivalent employees and an operating budget of approximately $ 5 2 million along with various sources including State, Federal and other special funds.

    BeautifySJ

    The BeautifySJ Program conducts blight reduction, community beautification, neighborhood engagement, and encampment management services . Services include graffiti removal program, i l legal d umping p rogram, n eighborhood d umpster d ay p rogram, n eighborhood li tter p rogram, recreational v ehicle p ollution p revention p rogram, e ncampment tr ash removal program/abatement, c lean g ateways and c ash for t rash p rogram.

    Position Duties

    BeautifySJ is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Maintenance Worker II vacancy.

    Under general supervision, employees in the Maintenance Worker II (MWII) position provide lead direction to small crews engaged in the abatement and response to illegal dumping complaints throughout the City and provide support to all Beautify SJ programs including the Encampment Trash Program. MWIIs are major contributors to the Department's efforts to provide exceptional service to its residents by working to beautify the City . Employees are expected to work a five-day per week schedule, either Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday. Individuals in this classification may be required to work alternate work shifts, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Able to work with the unhoused community and in homeless encampments.
    • Working with neighborhood leaders and community based organizations to support beautification efforts in their communities.
    • Assist the Anti-Litter, Anti-Graffiti, Neighborhood Beautification projects in addition to other blight reduction and beautification projects through BeautifySJ.
    • Planning work and providing lead direction to, and participating in, small and large crews engaged in the response and abatement of reported and non-reported illegally dumped materials within public rights-of-way including streets and sidewalks, parks, trails, City owned property, and other properties where the City has Right of Entry to address blight issues.


    More information on the typical duties can be found in the Class Specification for Maintenance Worker II. This position requires being able to l ift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment;

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [G.E.D.] Test or California Proficiency Certificate)

    Experience: T hree (3) years of experience in the maintenance, or repair of streets, sewers, parks or public facilities, or related field.

    Certifications:

    • Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history.

    Computer Skills: Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.
    - Experience with Salesforce.

    Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills: Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Customer Service: Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using a professional demeanor.

    Flexibility: Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes, performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment.

    Multi-Tasking: Can handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously; has handled a wide variety of assignments in past and/or current position(s).
