The Position Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. The position serves as program coordinator of the Nevada Brownfields Program (NBP) in the Superfund Branch, Bureau of Corrective Actions (BCA), Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. The brownfields coordinator is responsible for all aspects of managing the state brownfields program in close coordination and support from the Superfund Branch supervisor. The program is wholly funded through an annual federal grant administered by USEPA.
The majority of funding supports site specific work across the state to assess and clean-up brownfield properties with the goal of promoting reuse and redevelopment. Site specific work is performed by a qualified environmental firm under contract to the NBP and eligibility for program assistance is typically limited to municipal governments and non-profits. Frequent scopes of work on site specific projects are Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Sampling and Analysis Plans, and Corrective Action Plans. Investigations typically involve sampling and analysis of soil, groundwater, and air for organic and inorganic contaminants as well as hazardous building materials. Responsibilities of the brownfields program coordinator include grant and contract management, review of project applications and contract deliverables, NBP promotion and outreach, website and database maintenance, client and stakeholder support, and other tasks required to manage the program. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and three years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements This position has a 25% travel requirement. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
