Position DescriptionProvides advanced professional services related to diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients. Coordinates the delivery of clinical health care within a TDCJ Correctional institution, insuring that the appropriate health care is accessible and provided to the inmate population in a timely fashion regardless of segregation status. Renders medical judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit according to TTUHSC Correctional Health Services Policies and Procedures, TDCJ Policies and Procedures, and National Commission on Correctional Health Care Standards. Works under the general direction of the Regional Medical Director with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Receives general supervision from the Regional Medical Director. Supervises physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Work is performed in a correctional institution with contact with inmates. Deadlines, interruptions, meetings, and travel necessary. Additionally, work requires collaboration with the faculty and staff at TTUHSC.
Major/Essential FunctionsClinical Care- Provides primary ambulatory medical care to inmates, including patient histories, physical exams, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
- Orders and interprets diagnostic tests (labs, imaging) and follows up with appropriate treatment.
- Delivers immediate care for medical emergencies involving inmates, staff, or visitors.
- Performs minor surgical and orthopedic procedures as medically competent.
- Refers patients to medical specialists and coordinates follow-up care when necessary.
- Participates in on-call rotations, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Medical Oversight & Documentation- Acts as the Unit Health Authority, ensuring quality care and compliance with healthcare standards.
- Supervises and delegates tasks to physician extenders (PAs, NPs) and reviews their documentation and clinical care.
- Supervises a clinical pharmacist in accordance with Drug Therapy Management regulations.
- Inspects and maintains accurate medical records including admissions, progress, discharge, and death summaries.
- Communicates promptly with the Regional Medical Director regarding any medical issues or concerns.
Leadership & Administrative Duties- Interacts with prison administrative staff to help develop and implement unit policies.
- Provides leadership and direction to clinical staff including hiring, training, and performance oversight.
- Delegates tasks appropriately and utilizes leadership skills to support effective team functioning.
- Ensures that the unit maintains a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Compliance & Risk Management- Assesses patient and staff safety risks and implements appropriate precautions.
- Ensures adherence to clinical standards and policies set by TTUHSC and TDCJ-ID.
- Maintains compliance with all approved medical and operational protocols.
Required QualificationsCurrent license to practice medicine by the Texas Medical Board. Current Drug Enforcement Agency controlled substances registration certificate.
