ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERDepartment: Environmental ServicesPay Grade: 108FLSA Status: Non-ExemptPersonnel Status: Regular Full-Time JOB SUMMARY This position participates in the enforcement of the City’s animal control ordinance. This position reports to the Animal Control Division Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Enforces City ordinances related to the treatment and control of animals.
- Performs animal capture and rescue duties.
- Advises and educates the public on responsible animal ownership.
- Secures animals that may be lost, abandoned, or pose a threat to public safety.
- Investigates reports of suspected animal bites, abuse, or neglect.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications: - Possession of or ability to readily obtain a State Euthanasia Certification within one (1) to (2) years of hire date.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of the City’s animal control ordinance.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and procedures used in the capture and care of stray or vicious animals.
- Knowledge of the behavior patterns of wild and domestic animals.
- Knowledge of the geographic area of the City.
- Skill in the operation of and maintenance of job-related tools and equipment.
- Skill in the interpretation and application of applicable regulations.
- Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is medium to heavy work which requires exerting up to 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in various indoor and outdoor environments. The employee is exposed to potentially dangerous animals, noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
