    Position Description
    The Head Nurse is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating patient care services (primarily nursing services) within an assigned specialty or sub-specialty area of a clinic. Persons in this position provide supervision and coordination of service to subordinate nursing personnel and may provide various levels of direct patient care. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions.

    Major/Essential Functions
    • Ensures staff competency to function as assigned.
    • Ensures nursing staff are properly trained and supervised to perform job functions.
    • Monitors nursing processes to determine the physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences of patients and their families, based upon interpretation of comprehensive health assessment findings.
    • Analyzes assessment data to identify problems, formulate goals/outcomes, and develop plans of care for patients and their families using evidence-based practice in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team members.
    • Monitors communication of patient data using Electronic Health Record to support decision making for delivery of optimal patient care.
    • Conducts departmental nursing staff meetings and co-facilitates clinic staff meetings. Prepares meeting minutes and reviews minutes with nursing staff members who were not present at the meeting.
    • Ensures EMR training is conducted for all nursing employees and updates to EMR processes are communicated to staff in a timely manner.
    • Personally assists with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EMR.
      Monitors staff to ensure compliance with evidence-based practice.
    • Monitors and ensures telephonic communication between clinic staff and patients comply with departmental and organizational policy. Priority is given to patient triage. Ensures staff are properly trained and are implementing departmental protocols.
    • Ensures orders for medical supplies, including medications and immunizations, are submitted in accordance with 5S standards and timed to ensure supplies necessary for patient care are available when needed. Inspects examination/treatment rooms and supply storage areas to ensure they are
      properly stocked and compliant with Infection Prevention and Control policies and clinic 5S standards.
    • Ensures and monitors proper disinfection and sterilization of medical equipment and instrumentation.
    • Ensures and monitors the preparation and operation of equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and/or procedures. Proactively communicates with Clinic Manager/Administrator regarding equipment needs and issues.
    • Ensures staff evaluate and report patient outcomes and responses to therapeutic interventions. Ensures staff complete proper follow-up on patient care issues/messaging.
    • Performs investigation of accidents/ injuries and generates Occurrence Reports for unexpected outcomes.
    • Carries out Manager on Duty functions as assigned, including keeping patients informed about delays in clinic and making adjustments to provider schedules to recover service experience for patients. Performs investigations of patient complaints and generates documentation per clinic and organizational policies. Responds to/resolves complaints related to patient care or treatment issues by communicating with the patient, clinic staff, and physicians as appropriate.
    • Participates in departmental emergency response drills and ensures participation of staff in organizational emergency preparedness drills.
    • Performs other duties as assigned in a professional and timely manner.


    Required Qualifications
    Graduate from an approved accredited nursing program. Current RN license in the State of Texas or ability to obtain a Texas license. At least four years in nursing, with at least two of those years in a supervisory capacity.
