The Position
OPEN/PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTHS PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Positions in this classification work under general supervision and perform independent journey-level repair, maintenance and overhauls of heavy-duty diesel and hydraulic based equipment, or specialized fire apparatus equipment.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Performs preventive maintenance and general repair work, following proper diagnostic and troubleshooting in all general automotive areas, including, but not limited to work on: engines, transmissions, differentials, steering and suspension, brakes, clutches, belts, hoses, lights, tires of all sizes and batteries.
Performs inspections and safety checks on vehicles repaired or maintained by contract, such as transit buses.
Overhauls and repairs motors, transmissions, differentials and universal joints, as well as electrical fuel injection, suspensions and hydraulic repairs on a large variety of vehicles and equipment.
Transports a variety of automotive equipment. Lifts, carries, loads and unloads heavy equipment components.
Cleans, washes and polishes vehicles and motor equipment. Fuels vehicles.
Completes routine reports, prepares and maintains stock records and reports.
Inspects and diagnoses operation of diesel, hydraulic and/or specialized fire apparatus equipment.
Overhauls and repairs clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, motors, ignitions, carburetors, fuel systems, electrical and hydraulic systems of automotive vehicles, sanitation trucks, trailers, street sweepers, tractors, bucket trucks, cranes, backhoes, earthsaws, forklifts, and other equipment.
Interprets electrical circuits and machine drawings of light and heavy-duty motorized equipment.
May perform heavy-duty welding as needed.
Prepares records of work completed and parts used.
Directs the work of a helper.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
When assigned to the Fire Department:
Performs independent journey-level work on aerial ladder trucks, fire engines, paramedic trucks and other related apparatus.
Minimum Requirements
Experience
Three years experience in heavy-duty automotive repair work involving diesel and hydraulic equipment.
Experience working with natural gas engines is highly desirable.
Education/Training
Completion of some formal training or education in the field of mechanical maintenance.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Class C California driver's license.
Depending on the assignment, a Class A or Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement will be required prior to the completion of the probationary period.
ASE certifications in truck categories is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Applicable safety rules, practices and procedures.
Basic automotive and motor repair procedures.
General mechanics with special emphasis on diesel engine diagnoses, maintenance and repair.
Hydraulic system diagnoses, maintenance and repair.
Tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
When assigned to the Fire Department:
Knowledge of:
Automotive and fire apparatus maintenance and repair
Ability to:
Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors.
Communicate effectively in English.
Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
Lift and carry heavy equipment.
Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Read, write and comprehend directions in English.
Road test diversified automotive equipment, including motorcycles.
When assigned to the Fire Department:
Ability to:
Repair and maintain aerial ladders and secondary braking systems.
Repair fire pumps, transmissions, relief and transfer valves.
Other Characteristics
Willingness to:
Work overtime as requested and differing shifts as required.
Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
Promotional Eligibility
Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification on file in the Human Resources Department. Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours. (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

Selection Process
EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. Only the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.
Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: (Weight of 50%) To evaluate the applicant's equipment mechanical skills and abilities.
ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 50%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and personal fitness for the position.
TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Any evaluation will be based on the candidate's education and experience as related to the position. Any examination will be to evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills for the position. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination. The selected candidate will be subjected to a background check including Livescan fingerprinting.
