The Position
In either a consultation or an enforcement mode, Industrial Hygienists identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for health hazards in the workplace through conducting inspections, investigations, surveys, research and analysis involving scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, engineering, epidemiology, toxicology, physiology, infection control, biomechanical and human factors engineering, and occupational health.
The Department of Business & Industry is recruiting to underfill an Industrial Hygienist 3 position within the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (NV OSHA) Enforcement Section in Las Vegas. This position will report to the Industrial Hygiene Supervisor. Under close supervision, the incumbent will receive training in performing health and safety inspections at workplaces throughout Southern Nevada. Once trained, the incumbent will promote health and safety practices, perform inspections independently, and enforce State and Federal health and safety laws and regulations (e.g. NRS 618, NAC 618, 29 CFR 1910, 29 CFR 1926). Incumbents will identify safety and health hazards and violations and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement; research specific technology and industry applications using technical references and applicable codes and standards; prepare written reports; investigate industrial accidents resulting in serious injuries or fatalities; and investigate complaints. The incumbent will be required to use a state vehicle to conduct state business, but use of their personal vehicle may also be required. They may be required to work shifts other than 8:00am to 5:00pm to include nights, weekends, and holidays. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, chemistry, physics, biology, toxicology, environmental engineering, or closely related field and one year of professional experience with the principal duty of safety officer in an industrial or construction setting which included conducting inspections or investigations for the purpose of evaluating workplace health and safety; OR master's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, or closely related field; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of experience and education; OR one year of experience in Nevada State service as an Industrial Hygienist I; Safety Representative, Consultation; or Safety Representative, Enforcement. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
