    Job Description:

    Engineering Associate C

    Purpose:

    Under limited supervision of a Professional Engineer, this position independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard and/or complex engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Reviews plans and permits under the supervision of a professional engineer and development proposals for impacts and performing preliminary and final designs and/or prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
    • Provides a variety information to customers by contacts of personnel to include inter and intra departmental administrative, engineering and construction personnel, other government agencies, contractors, consultants and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions and respond to complaints.
    • Is responsible for progressively complex projects by preparing cost estimated and engineering and feasibility reports and studies, projects, and assigned programs
    • Inspects and monitor sprojects for legal compliance by reviewing work completed by contractors and monitoring compliance to specifications.
    • Prepares contract documents, technical specifications and plans. Prepares and monitors project and program schedules and budgets. Prepares progress and final reports and estimates.
    • Manages and coordinates special projects; supervises and/or leads a design team in the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans; schedules, estimates, budgets, and details final construction plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements; oversees project progress from design through construction.
    • Assists and/or writes specifications by performing preliminary and/or final designs; prepares design criteria for assigned projects in appropriate discipline.
    • Performs equipment evaluations to ensure valid results.
    • Conducts field investigations to ensure compliance of specifications, reviews work for accuracy and recommends approval of contract changes.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of diversified, fundamental scientific and civil engineering concepts, phenomena, and relationships.
    • Knowledge of mathematical techniques such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry.
    • Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of assigned discipline.
    • Knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: Civil, Environmental, Structural, Architectural, Mechanical and/or Electrical engineering terminology and techniques.
    • Knowledge of City purchasing and contract policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of applicability of established engineering principles and methods.
    • Knowledge of various phases of the plans review and inspections processes.
    • Knowledge of various computer software programs.
    • Knowledge of preparation of cost estimates and engineering and feasibility reports.
    • Skill in oral and written technical and/or general communication.
    • Ability to perform more complex engineering computations, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry, rapidly and accurately.
    • Ability to interpret and update quarter-section maps.
    • Ability to Interpret and make decisions in conformance within established policies and practices.
    • Ability to communicate and provide direction to peers and assigned personnel.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus four (4) years of experience in a field related to the job, one (1) year in a lead capacity.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with various types of drainage infrastructure design: open channels, stormwater ponds, and storm drain pipes.
    • Experience in design plan development using AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
    • Experience in conducting field surveys for topography, utilities, and other surface features using Trimble and/or Leica survey instruments.
    • Experience in researching utility as-built drawings and other infrastructure.
    • Experience piloting aerial drones/UAVs.

    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Austin Watershed Protection is seeking an Engineering Associate C to assist with project design and coordination for the Stream Restoration Program in the Project Design and Delivery Division. Members of this team value their role as civil servants and environmental stewards of Austin’s creeks.

    The successful candidate will work with an engineering team to assist with design plan development, survey, construction inspection, and project coordination including permitting & resolving utility conflicts. Work will include the use of various software, especially AutoCAD Civil3D, for the preparation of construction drawings, but also ESRI ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, and other design software. Applicants should have experience with various types of drainage infrastructure, such as open channels, stormwater control measures (ponds), and/or storm drainpipe systems.

    Ideal candidates are those that thrive in diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environments. Additional skills and experiences which would be of interest include piloting UAVs (drones) and/or proficiency working in rugged outdoor environments (e.g., being comfortable trekking through urban and vegetated creeks and drainage easements).

    Candidates must have at least four years of combined education and experience in a related field, which may substitute for a bachelor’s degree to help meet minimum qualifications.     Salary Range:
    $32.96 - $41.20, depending on qualifications and experience

    Days and Hours:
    40 hours per week, Monay - Friday with the ability for a 60% telework schedule per week after initial training period. Exceptions may apply
    subject to the business needs of the department.
