    Summary/Class Characteristics

    Part Time Class/Swim Instructor

    The City of Petaluma is looking to fill several Class/Swim Instructor positions to serve at the Petaluma Swim Center and Cavanagh Pool. Successful candidates will be hired at the Class/Swim Instructor A or Class/Swim Instructor B level, dependent upon their qualifications and experience.

    This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Shifts start as early as 5am and end as late as 9pm. Shifts vary by season, but will include working weekends and holidays.

    This recruitment will remain open until filled and may close at any time. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply early for first consideration. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.

    Summary

    Class/Swim Instructors deliver specialized recreation and aquatics programs. They lead participants in a specific recreation, leisure, skill development, or exercise activity.

    Class Characteristics

    Class/Swim Instructors apply their subject matter expertise in leading classes of participants in specialized activities. Examples of classes which may be led by a Class Instructor include, but are not limited to swim lessons, water exercise programs, yoga, tennis, dance, writing skills, and world languages. Class Instructors leading swimming lessons and/or water exercise programs may be partnered with a Lifeguard to increase participant safety. The Part-Time Class/Swim Instructor A is distinguished from that of the Part-Time Class/Swim Instructor B in that the latter requires greater experience, independence, and expertise at a higher level.

    Duties

    Plan, implement, and lead classes which progressively develop participant skills.

    Monitor program participants and adapt activities to their needs/abilities.

    Take actions to improve participant and facility safety, reporting any security concerns.

    Manage conflicts in a class setting and maintain participants’ focus.

    Complete and submit reports/forms, as required.

    Courteously interact with participants, their families, and facility guests.

    Provide information to the public, communicate department policies, and refer questions/concerns to appropriate staff.

    Process activity sales/cash register operation.

    Collect and enter participant data.

    Maintain and organize supplies and equipment.

    Prepare materials (e.g., copies, weights, kickboards, craft supplies, etc.) for activities.

    Perform activity set-up/clean-up.

    Perform light custodial work.

    Perform similar duties in support of recreation programs and/or community center operations.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge of:

    Demonstrate mastery of the subject matter(s) and have a passion for helping others grow.

    Principles and practices of customer service.

    Education and Experience

    Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities would be:

    Possession of advanced knowledge related to assigned subject matter(s). This may be demonstrated by a combination of previous work experience, volunteer experience, and/or relevant certifications.

    Part-Time Class/Swim Instructor A

    N/A

    Part-Time Class/Swim Instructor B

    2 years of experience teaching the same or similar material for a longer period of time.

    Certifications/Licenses :

    Must be certified in First Aid and CPR (this is provided by the City).

    Special certifications/licenses for specialized subjects or skills may be required.

Positions may also require grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds, dependent upon the specific task. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Positions may require the employee to be exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level for most assignments is moderate to loud.
