    Position Description

    DEPUTY SHERIFF RECRUIT DEPUTY SHERIFF-Corrections
    $6,755 per month $7,842 - $10,711 per month

    FINAL FILING DEADLINE: Open Filing Period
    Exam #26/36E21/02LA

    Physical Agility and Written Exam Dates: April 17th and 18th, 2026, July 25, 2026, and October 24, 2026, at 8:00 AM. Scheduling is required. Applications are screened monthly. Exam Location: Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, 1414 Natividad Road, Salinas, CA 93906.

    WRITTEN WAIVER: The written exam may be waived for applicants who have graduated from an approved CA P.O.S.T Police Academy, currently enrolled in a CA P.O.S.T approved Police Academy, or for applicants who have previously taken the P.O.S.T. Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) written exam within one year and possess a minimum T-Score of 42. A copy of the certificate must be included with the application.

    PHYSICAL AGILITY WAIVER: The physical agility may be waived for applicants who have previously passed the Monterey County physical agility exam or South Bay Regional Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) physical agility exam within 12 months with a minimum overall score of 320. A copy of the certificate must be included with the application.

    The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is seeking individuals to work in the Correction Operations Bureau. Deputy Sheriffs assigned to work in the jail are responsible for the security, custody, transport, and supervision of incarcerated individuals and may serve as a Court Bailiff.

    Candidates will be considered at both the Deputy Sheriff-Corrections and Deputy Sheriff-Recruit levels. Incumbents appointed as Deputy Sheriff-Recruit may be promoted to Deputy Sheriff-Corrections upon successfully graduating an approved CA P.O.S.T. Police BASIC academy and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority in accordance with the Flexible Staffing Program and Guidelines.

    RECRUITS: Are “at-will” employees and are sworn in as Deputy Sheriff-Corrections upon graduation from the CA P.O.S.T. Academy. Failure to graduate or to meet the Sheriff’s Office standards is cause for release from this position.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies.

    Examples of Duties

    Deputy Sheriff-Corrections:
    Supervise and controls behavior and activities of persons confined to the Sheriff's Corrections Operation Bureau facilities.Conducts strip, skin and pat down searches of persons; determines the presence of contraband.Conducts initial investigation of incarcerated persons complaints, accidents or crime that occur within the facility.Books and receives incarcerated persons upon admission to county jail; classifies incarcerated persons according to security risk factors and determines location and number of persons within facilities.Conducts physical head count of incarcerated persons to determine location and number of persons within facilities.Transports incarcerated persons to and from jail facilities, court, hospital or medical appointments.Transports criminals or fugitives from anywhere in the United States for extradition purposes.Prepares written reports and maintains various agency records.Inspects jail facilities for the presence of illegal activities, contraband or damagesAnswers any inquiries from the public and other law enforcement personnel pertaining to jail policies and incarcerated person as allowed by departmental regulations.

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

    Deputy Sheriff-Corrections:

    Working Knowledge of:
    Correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; proper use of words, sentence structure, paragraph construction to write comprehensive narrative reports.
    Skill and Ability to:
    Communicate orally with all ages, social and educational levels, and various ethnic groups within the community.Use tact, logical reasoning and sensitivity when dealing with the public.Develop and maintain an effective relationship with departmental personnel, other law enforcement and criminal justice agencies and the public.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:

    Minimum Qualifications: Must meet California Government Codes 1029 and 1031 requirements; Sheriff’s Office Standards; Minimum requirements as indicated on the Supplemental Questions; and Posses and maintain a Class C Driver’s License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicle at time of hire. Computer and typing skills highly desired.

    Required Conditions of Employment: Work flexible hours, shifts, weekends and holidays, and subject to hold-over and call-back duty; Wear a uniform or appropriate attire for non-uniform duties; and maintain the standards established by P.O.S.T., S.T.C. (Standards and Training for Corrections) and the Sheriff’s Office.

    Background Review: Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, which includes a polygraph examination or voice stress analysis, medical and psychological examinations. Some positions in this classification are covered by the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing as required by law.
