    Job Classification: Environmental Health and Safety Professional II

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,877 - $6,488 per month

    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

    THE DEPARTMENT:

    The mission of the Division of Administrative Affairs is to provide high quality fiscal, human and facility services in support of the university through partnerships and innovative solutions.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Hazardous Waste Management
    • Implement and support campus hazardous materials management programs in compliance with applicable regulations, including Cal/OSHA, California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA), EPA, DOT, and local regulatory agencies.
    • Assist in the safe handling, storage, labeling, transportation, and disposal of hazardous chemicals, biological hazards, radioactive materials and other regulated substances.
    • Conduct routine inspections and audits of laboratories, shops, maintenance areas, and other facilities to ensure compliance with university policies and regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain accurate records, inventories, permits, and documentation, including SDSs, hazardous waste manifests, and chemical inventories of the hazardous waste storage area.

    Training and Outreach
    • Provide training and guidance to faculty, staff, students, and researchers on hazardous materials safety, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
    • Assist with the development of safety training materials, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and campus guidance documents.
    • Promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship within the university community.

    Incident Response & Investigation
    • Respond to hazardous materials incidents, spills, and emergencies; assist with containment, cleanup coordination, and documentation.
    • Participate in incident investigations and prepare reports identifying root causes and corrective actions.
    • Support emergency preparedness planning, drills, and coordination with University Police, Emergency Management, and external emergency responders.
    • May serve in a support role to the Safety Officer (Incident Command System) in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
    • The position is exempt from overtime and may require the need to work after hours, weekends, campus closures and holidays as deemed appropriate by the EHS Director to meet campus demand and core department responsibilities with respect to environmental regulatory compliance and/or emergency response.

    Hazardous Chemical Barcoding and Inventory Management
    • Manually scan and inventory individually barcoded hazardous chemical containers throughout campus and enter newly acquired materials into the chemical inventory management system to ensure the campus hazardous chemical inventory is accurate.
    • Work with service provider to ensure the chemical inventory management system is always operational and provide users with easy and quick access to prepopulated chemical and safety information.
    • Provide staff and other local regulatory agencies with chemical inventories when requested.
    • Develop standard operating procedures and provide training to users on the chemical inventory management system.

    Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
    • Work collaboratively with faculty, research staff, facilities personnel, university housing, ASI, CPPE and administrators to address hazardous materials concerns.
    • Assist EH&S leadership with regulatory inspections and agency interactions.
    • Stay informed of changes in state and federal regulations and emerging best practices relevant to higher education and research environments.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
    • Driver License, Valid and in State Valid California Driver's License and insurance.
    • General knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
    • Analytical skills to collect, analyze, and summarize data and metrics.
    • Organizational skills, with the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
    • Demonstrated communication skills with the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
    • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
    • Computer skills to appropriately use technology and relevant software package
    • Working skills and knowledge of environmental health and safety principles, practices, methodologies, and regulations.
    • Demonstrated experience in conducting safety inspections and incident investigations.
    • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify environmental health and safety risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
    • Strong organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
    • Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders, develop and deliver environmental health and safety training, influence decision-making processes, and communicate complex issues in a clear and concise manner.
    • Knowledge of environmental health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
    • Proficient in using environmental health and safety software and tools.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • HAZWOPER certified (40 hour) or able to complete within 1 year of hire.
    • First Aid, CPR, AED certified or able to complete required training within 1 year of hire.

    Background Check

    CSU Classification Salary Range

    This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website . The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website . The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5,877 and maximum $8,561 per month.     University Driving Requirement

    Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
