    The Job

    *** This recruitment is open only to current San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective/Corporals. ***

    The Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for Sheriff's Sergeants who supervise a group of deputies and/or detective/corporals engaged in law enforcement activities. This recruitment will result in a new list of eligible candidates to replace the existing list.

    Minimum Requirements

    Experience: Applicants must be currently employed in a regular full-time position with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department as a Sheriff's Detective/Corporal, and have at least thirty (30) months of full-time experience as a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective/Corporal as of the filing deadline of April 10, 2026.

    Note: Clearly differentiate between current San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective/Corporal experience and prior experience.

    Certificates: Indicate any certificates you possess, including certificates for Bomb/Arson and for Aviation; include certificate number and expiration dates. Those who list specialized certificates on the application may be considered for specific positions.

    Selection Process

    The Examination is expected to be administered the weeks of May 4 - 15, 2026 at a location in the San Bernardino area. Confirmation of date/time/location of the examination will be sent approximately one week after the filing date of this recruitment.

    The Written Multiple Choice Test (weighted 35%) will cover the following topics:
    • Departmental Policies and Procedures
    • Interpersonal and Supervisory Skills
    Candidates must be successful on the Written Test to have the Writing Exercise/Work Simulation evaluated.

    The Writing Exercise/Work Simulation (weighted 25%) will be administered on a computer on the same date/time as the Written Test; it will be evaluated only for those candidates who are successful on the Written Test. Candidates must be successful on the Written Test and the Writing Exercise/Work Simulation to have the Promotional Evaluation scored.

    The Promotional Evaluation (weighted 40%)will be a competitive evaluation of promotability, based on a departmental review of applicants' knowledge, skills, and abilities. Only those candidates who are successful on the Written Test and the Writing Exercise/Work Simulation will have the Promotional Evaluation scored.

    Final grades will be based on a combination of the Written Test, Writing Exercise/Work Simulation, and the Promotional Evaluation.
