San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) is a public hospital and clinic system fully accredited by The Joint Commission. The Medical Center operates outpatient clinics throughout San Mateo County and an acute-care hospital in San Mateo. The mission of San Mateo Medical Center is to "partner with patients to provide excellent care with compassion and respect." As part of an integrated Health System, the Medical Center serves the healthcare needs of all residents of San Mateo County, with an emphasis on education and prevention.
SMMC is seeking an experienced Central Services Technician to perform duties associated with handling medical supplies, materials management and delivery/routing support in the Medical Center. The
ideal candidate will have:
- Previous hospital materials management experience.
- Previous experience with physical inventory.
- Knowledge of distribution and warehousing.
- Knowledge of efficient material flow processes, including proper handling, routing, and tracking of incoming documents and packages within a multi-department environment.
- Ability to manage the intake, sorting, and distribution of incoming documents, packages, and operational materials to ensure timely delivery to the appropriate departments
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to lift 35 pounds, such as supplies and equipment.
- Flexible scheduling (weekends, holidays, evenings, other shifts, etc.)
Note: There is currently one regular full-time vacancy.
Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following, if assigned to Central Services and Supply (Option 3):- Receive and place stock into inventory.
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies.
- Process par level forms.
- Replenish supplies in various healthcare units.
- Deliver supplies in cases of an emergency.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of :- Principles, techniques and procedures specific to area of assignment.
- Principles and techniques in delivering patient care services related to personal hygiene, comfort, treatment, transportation, rehabilitation and physical or psychosocial needs.
- Infection control.
- Diagnostic imaging.
- Safe lifting techniques.
If assigned to Option 3 - Central Services and Supply: - Principles and techniques of maintaining stock of and delivering medical supplies to various medical departments in a hospital or skilled nursing facility.
- Proper inventory control.
- Computer data entry and retrieval.
Skill/Ability to : - Follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Perform a variety of tasks and activities.
- Develop and maintain empathetic attitudes toward patients.
- Provide assistance in delivering patient care in a medical setting such as bathing, feeding, bed making, dressing, and sterilization of patient care equipment.
- Observe and record patient conditions and vital signs.
- Lift and transport patients and heavy items, such as supplies and equipment.
- Work with patients with multiple diagnoses.
- Work with a culturally, socio-economically diverse patient population of varying ages.
Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Option 3 - Central Services and Supply: One year of experience in a hospital or acute care nursing facility performing relevant activities in a central supply department.
Some positions may require a current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association or a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Red Cross. Application/Examination

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: Pass/Fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification . All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
