    Position Description

    The City of Tacoma's Public Works Department, Street Operations Division, is recruiting to establish an Eligible List for the position of Street Maintenance Worker, which will be used to fill vacancies as they occur for a period of one year. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, a Street Maintenance Worker is responsible to perform a variety of semi-skilled duties in the maintenance of City streets and rights-of-way as a member of a crew, or independently as assigned. They may also train and provide work direction to summer and temporary employees.
    The ideal candidate will:

    • Possess a strong background in the field of asphalt work, including solid raking and rolling skills
    • Possess experience with concrete work, including form setting, finishing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters

    Street Maintenance Workers perform a variety of duties in street maintenance assigned to a particular job such as:
    • Pothole patching
    • Crack pouring
    • Asphalt breakout
    • Asphalt paving
    • Concrete operations
    • Flagging traffic
    • Right-of-way cleaning
    • Traffic sign installation

    Other job duties may include:
    • Back filing behind curbs and ADA ramps.
    • Cleaning, maintaining, repairing and resurfacing streets as assigned.
    • Performing asphalt patching and finishing duties as assigned; preparing cuts and holes and placement of asphalt; rolling in asphalt gutters with hand-roller; putting in skin patches.
    • Assisting with concrete removal and repair; operating a jackhammer; assisting in pouring and finishing concrete.
    • Assuring safety of citizens in vehicles, pedestrians, City workers and equipment at job site; set-up of job sites, placement of warning signs, cones and barricades; replacement of manhole covers and catch-basin grates; flagging traffic.
    • Responding to emergency calls as assigned; resetting or replacing traffic signs with portable signs, clearing obstructions such as fallen trees, rock or earth slides; containing and cleaning non-hazardous spills and clearing a variety of debris; patching sinkholes and setting detours.
    • Spreading sand and salt during ice and snow conditions; removing ice from stairs and sidewalks.
    • Performing a variety of incidental janitorial duties.
    • Receiving and transmitting radio and telephone communications from police department, other public works departments and the public concerning a wide variety of emergencies; relaying messages to appropriate field truck.
    • Operate a variety of tools and equipment including but not limited to dump-trucks, pick-up trucks, jackhammers, compressors, picks and shovels, chain saws and hand saws, brooms, hoists, pitchforks, concrete saw and backpack blower.
    • When directed, may perform a variety of grounds maintenance functions including, but not limited to mowing, edging, weeding, brush cutting, seeding, sod laying, tree planting and spreading mulch, topsoil and gravel in landscape areas as needed.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
    • Outdoor environment; subject to adverse weather conditions and noise; subject to responding to emergency calls after regular duty hours including graveyard, swing shift, weekends and holidays.
    • This position requires performing heavy manual labor.
    • Employees in this class are exposed to the dangers of traffic and potentially hazardous materials and equipment.
    • May work a variety of shifts including graveyard, swing, weekends and holidays.


    Qualifications

    An equivalent combination of education, training or experience, which provides the background required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the classification.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    Valid Washington State driver's license with maintenance thereafter.

    Valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License, Class A with Tanker endorsement and air brake restrictions removed, must be obtained prior to completion of probation with maintenance thereafter (this does not apply to employees in this classification prior to 1/1/2010).

    Employees in this classification must receive a Traffic Control Card and a First Aid Card prior to completion of probation.

    Insurance Plans: Employees are covered by a long-term disability plan. Short-term and expanded long-term disability insurance plans are also available to employees. The State Industrial Insurance Act also covers employees.

    Deferred Compensation: Income can be set aside on a pretax basis and invested for supplementation of normal retirement income.

    Retirement: All employees of the City, except members of the Police and Fire services, Tacoma Rail and certain project employees, are included in the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System.     Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
