Job SummaryThe City of Olathe is hiring a
Fleet Maintenance Technician to join our
Light Side (Light Duty Fleet). This role is essential to keeping our vehicles and equipment safe, reliable, and ready to support City services everyday.
Light Side Focus The Light Side team primarily handles the maintenance and repair of standard, everyday vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) up to 10,000 pounds.
Light Side (Light-Duty Fleet) What it covers - Passenger vehicles and lighter units, typically:
- Sedans, SUVs, Pickups
- Small vans, light utility trucks
- Some smaller trailers and compact equipment
Typical work performed - Preventive maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment (oil/filters/fluids, inspections)
- Brakes, tires, steering/suspension
- Basic electrical/starting/charging, HVAC, minor drivability diagnostics
- Upfitting support (lights, radios, basic accessories), often for police units
Shop setup / tools - Standard lifts (2-post/4-post), tire machines/balancers
- Lighter diagnostic tooling, scan tools, standard jacks/stands
Technician Level Placement (I-IV)This recruitment will be to fill a
Technician I, II, III, or IVposition.
Starting level and paywill be based on verified experience and certifications.
Level Pay Range Minimum Education & Experience | Required Certifications I $21.75-$24.97 2 Years A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
II $23.75-$26.95 3 Years A/C certification plus three certifications total: two ASE (Brakes and Suspension) plus one additional certification (ASE of choice or EVT F1/F2)
III $25.50-$29.72 6 Years A/C certification plus three ASE certifications total (two ASE in Brakes and Suspension plus one ASE of choice) and EVT F1/F2 + F3 + F4
IV $28.00-$33.20 10 Years A/C certification plus ASE Master Mechanic credentials and all required EVT training
Certification Acronyms (Quick Key): - ASE = National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (industry certifications)
- EVT = Emergency Vehicle Technician (certifications commonly used for public safety/fleet work)
Additional Requirements (All Levels)- High school diploma or equivalent, with coursework in automotive technology (trade school education preferred).
- ValidState of Kansas driver’s licensewith a favorable driving record.
- Ability to obtain aKansas Class B CDLwithair brake and tanker endorsementswithinsix (6) monthsof hire.

Day Shift Schedule Monday-Friday:6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
or7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.- Analyze vehicle and equipment failures; determine causes and recommend and/or complete repair solutions.
- Perform preventative maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform vehicle and equipment repairs including but not limited to; Engine, Transmission, brake, suspension, hydraulic and electrical repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
- Perform equipment installation, fabrication, welding and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
- Respond to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including after hours calls.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records and reports on repairs performed and on equipment usage and condition.
- Perform wide range of repairs on Police and Fire equipment.
- Could be required to stand in for Team Leader during an absence.
Experience & Qualification Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Experience: Minimum of six years of training and /or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair.Hydraulic experience preferred.
Education: High School graduate supplemented with course work in automotive technology.Trade school preferred /not required.
License & Certification(s): Possession of valid Class B CDL (with air brakes) required, or acquisition of said license within 6 months of employment required. A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification required.Combination of three (3) ASE certifications, two of which will be brakes and suspension, the third is choice.Heavy side would require F1 or F2 plus F3 and F4.Light side would require F1 or F2 plus L1 and ASE electrical.
Supervisory Training:Two (2) of city supplied training such as Documenting Discipline, FMLA, FLSA, or Legal Perspectives.
