    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    The IT Lead serves as the senior technical resource for the Houston Fire Department, overseeing daily IT operations, supporting mission-critical public safety systems, and ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of technology used by fire stations, dispatch centers, emergency response teams, and administrative staff. This role provides hands-on technical leadership, mentors IT staff, and collaborates closely with command staff to align technology solutions with operational needs.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide day-to-day technical leadership for the HFD IT team, including prioritizing tasks, assigning work, and overseeing project execution.
    • Maintain high availability and performance of mission-critical systems including MDC/CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch/MDC tablets), EMS (Emergency Medical Services/EMS tablets), APAA (Apex Personnel Accountability/tablets) PC/tablet equipment.
    • Manage computer systems across fire stations, training facilities, and administrative buildings, including all office based and mobile PCs.
    • Oversee incident response for IT outages for MDC, EMS and APAA tablets, ensuring rapid and coordinated resolution.
    • Collaborate with fire command staff, dispatch leadership, and HITS IT teams to support technology initiatives and ensure alignment with city standards.
    • Lead and participate in technology modernization efforts, including cloud migrations, hardware upgrades, system integrations and PC Refresh initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain documentation for systems, processes, and configurations.
    • Mentor junior IT staff and participate in performance feedback and training plans.
    • Coordinate with vendors, service providers, and public safety technology partners as needed.
    • Participate in on-call rotation to support 24/7 public safety operations.
    • Reports to the IT Manager - Infrastructure (Compute)


    WORKING CONDITIONS

    There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, and air conditioning. Significant time spent using computer displays, keyboard, and mouse.

    Participation in emergency response events, disasters and departmental weather activations is required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION
    Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field.
    Information systems-specific technical certifications may be substituted for 1 year of either the education or the experience requirement, as applicable. Related professional Information Systems experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

    EXPERIENCE
    At least six (6) years of technology experience supporting IT infrastructure including networks, security, and hardware.
    System-specific technical certifications will often be required.
    System-specific technical certifications may be considered for substitution for 1 year of experience.

    A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS PREFERED:

    • CompTIA A+
    • MCDST

    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **

    Preference will be given to candidates with the following skillsets:

    Experience supporting 24/7 operational environments or emergency response organizations.

    Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
