Job Summary
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (NDCNR), protects, manages, and enhances the State’s resources to provide the highest quality of life for Nevada’s citizens and visitors. The NDCNR with over 900 employees consists of the Director’s Office and the following divisions and programs: Environmental Protection, Forestry, State Lands, State Parks, Water Resources, Outdoor Recreation, Natural Heritage, State Historic Preservation Office, Off-Highway Vehicles, Sagebrush Ecosystem, and the Conservation Districts Program. The Department also provides support staff to the Nevada Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and has responsibility for numerous Boards, Commissions, and Councils. The Department has locations and/or provides program services in every community of the State. The Division of Water Resources (NDWR) is recruiting for two Staff I, Associate Engineers who serve under direction of the State Engineer, Deputy Administrator, and the Planning Section Chief. The incumbents assist the NDWR in performing duties described under NRS Chapter 540. The overall planning efforts of the NDWR involve water resource planning, conservation, protection, and management for the State of Nevada. One position will act as the Meters Database Administrator and will provide IT support to internal and external users, provide quality assurance and quality control of the data, and will identify any issues and/or future needs of the application. Both positions will also support the Section Chief and Staff II, Associate Engineer, in reviewing water use inventories, making water use estimates, and assist in the creation of a statewide water use database. Both positions may also assist the Section Chief and Staff II, Associate Engineer, in the development of a state-wide water and drought resiliency plan.
Associate Engineers perform a broad range of engineering work not requiring licensure by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Associate Engineers are distinguished from Engineering Technicians by greater latitude in the interpretation and application of established engineering criteria, and their technical expertise in the particular program area and/or knowledge acquired in a baccalaureate course of study in engineering or a related discipline. In addition, Associate Engineer duties are typically distinguished from advanced Engineering Technician duties by a greater responsibility for reviewing, interpreting and using judgment to make recommendations and determinations based on data received, organized, compiled and summarized by lower level technical staff including Engineering Technicians
Essential Qualifications
Certification by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; OR two years of journey level technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Job Duties
Incumbents either:
1) work under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer and gain knowledge and experience required for licensure as a professional engineer;
or
2) work under general supervision and perform engineering work not requiring licensure. Staff I positions are distinguished from higher level Engineering Technicians by their participation in project design and management; responsibility for testing and inspections and the interpretation of results; determining the impact on project activities; and making design recommendations to professional engineers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of: practical application of algebra, geometry and trigonometry to specific problems and situations.
Skills in: engineering principles and practices; graph and table formatting.
Ability to: make computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles; read and understand technical reports, maps, specifications, plans and related documents; write technical reports and compose correspondence for transmittal to other governmental agencies; convert mathematical data, quantities and measurements and calculate area, volume, length and proportion; plan, organize and schedule work to accomplish established objectives; work within a Cartesian coordinate system; work as part of a team; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with contractors, co-workers, and representatives from other agencies; work independently and follow through on assignments; interact diplomatically with the public in potentially hostile situations.

Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
