The PositionThe City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of
Technical Intern to fill three (3) vacancies in the
Public Works Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
One Technical Intern will be highly motivated and looking to obtain valuable work experience to accompany their educational goals. This individual will be exposed to daily activities associated with the City's Capital Improvement Program including, but not limited to, drafting, quantity takeoffs, as-built preparation, pavement management tracking, and other duties as assigned.
A second Technical Intern will support the Storm Drain Engineering team in daily activities associated with City's Capital Improvement Program including, but not limited to design, and maintenance of stormwater infrastructure systems. The intern will assist engineers with data collection, hydraulic analysis, drafting, plan preparation and field inspections related to storm drain and flood control projects and other duties as assigned.
Finally, the third Technical Intern will support the Survey Division of the Public Works Department in an office setting. The intern will be trained and will assist with land survey activities, including customer service, organization, filing, land records research, GIS, CADD drafting, ArcGIS Pro editing, review of land survey documents (Legals, plats, Tract Maps, Parcel Maps), and other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate should be willing to learn, have excellent communication skills, and deliver outstanding customer service.
Under general supervision, Technical Interns perform entry level technical duties; to assist in various types of work designed to complement and supplement existing City programs; and to do related work as required.
Work PerformedDepending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform basic technical assignments in area of specialization.
- Assist technical staff and respond to requests for information.
- Collect, summarize, and analyze information and statistics on existing programs and services.
- Prepare and evaluate reports.
- Participate in the development and implementation of procedures, guidelines, and standards.
- Perform research in the resolution of technical concerns and/or problems.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Education: Current enrollment in, or completion within the last five years of, a program from an accredited post-secondary educational or vocational institution with major coursework related to a specialized field of study.
Experience: None required.
Highly Desired Qualifications:- Major area of study, or degree in, Civil Engineering
- Coursework in Calculus, Survey, Geotechnology, Highway Design, and/or Transportation
- Currently holding, or graduated with, a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Experience using AutoCad or GIS
- Experience working for a municipal agency or private infrastructure design firm
- Proficient using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Willingness to work up to 20 hours per week during school session breaks
- Willingness to work a minimum of 8 hours per week to accommodate a varying school schedule

Employees may be eligible for CalPERS membership upon hire if they are already a CalPERS member, Tier designation is based on membership date. If no prior CalPERS membership exists, employees must meet CalPERS eligibility requirements before being brought into CalPERS membership.
