Department of Economic Development Summer Intern Office of Economic Development Position Type: Temporary, Internship (20 hours per week for the summer)

Overview: The Economic Development Summer Intern will support the Albemarle County Economic Development Office on a range of strategic projects related to research, data development, and project analysis. This internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to local economic development work while contributing to practical tools, research, and recommendations that support the Office’s business development and strategic planning efforts.
Key Responsibilities/ Qualifications: - Support strategic economic development projects through research, data organization, and analysis
- Assist in developing and refining data collection tools used to track prospects, sector activity, and related project information
- Organize and summarize information from JobsEQ and other research sources to support office priorities
- Contribute baseline analysis and supporting information for the sector-organized pipeline dashboard
- Conduct research related to Albemarle County’s priority sectors, including national security, life sciences, and modern agribusiness
- Support background research for the Innovation Corridor Strategy Roadmap and related initiatives
- Assist with early information gathering and organization for the Unified RFI Response Library and similar tools
- Prepare written summaries, briefing materials, and project support documents as needed
- Perform related research, analytical, and project support tasks as assigned in support of office priorities
Expected Deliverables/ Learning Objectives: The intern will be expected to complete several project-based deliverables during the internship, including:
- A functional data collection tool or standardized intake form that can be used by the team
- A research memo with recommendations on how AI may support economic development work
- A sector research packet focused on one priority industry
- A short portfolio or summary of completed work at the end of the internship
This internship will provide practical experience in economic development strategy, sector research, data analysis, and local government operations.
Work Schedule and Pay: - Interns are expected to work approximately 20 hours per week
- Pay rate is $20/hour.
- Internship placement is projected for June-July 2026.
