In addition to the current opening, this recruitment may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to fill future HD Mechanic (Career Service) positions throughout the Department of Natural Resources & Parks (DNRP) over the next six (6) months.
About the Role:
HD Mechanics are responsible for repairing and maintaining all vehicles and equipment, both light and heavy-duty, in the Solid Waste Division. The equipment is utilized every day in our daily operations, both at the landfill and transfer stations. Daily inspections, repairs of vehicles and equipment are important to the success of our day-to-day operations and in keeping the transfer stations and landfill operating at optimal levels. Examples of projects include adjustments to the compactor lid wipers, complete replacement of the lid wipers, replacing the brass on the compactor carrier, and replacing hydraulic hoses.

Enjoy training, comprehensive benefits , and growth opportunities.Job DutiesWhat You Will Be Doing: - Diagnose and repair gas, diesel, electric, and hybrid-powered vehicles and equipment, including light and heavy-duty trucks, backhoes, dozers, street sweepers, loaders, and refuse trailers.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and replace ignition systems, fuel systems, lighting systems, electrical/computer control systems, and ABS brake systems.
- Maintain and document service, maintenance, repair records, and work orders.
- Provide technical assistance, repairs, resolve problems with work orders, and provide advice on complex or unusual projects.
- Read and interpret manuals, electrical and schematics, and illustrated parts diagrams.
- Use a Windows-based computer program for tracking all work performed and retrieving information about work to be performed.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, SkillsQualifications You Bring:
Meet any one of the following: - A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy-duty diesel vehicles and construction equipment. Medium and light-duty automotive vehicles repair and maintenance. OR,
- Two (2) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy-duty diesel vehicle and construction equipment or automotive repair and maintenance and completion of a two-year vocational, military, community college diesel automotive mechanics program or an accredited, recognized state-approved apprenticeship program. OR,
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skill to perform the work of the position.
- Experience and knowledge of safe workplace practices.
- Knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, Faster, and diagnostic software.

Physical Requirements and Environment:- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crouching and being in awkward positions at times. Some lifting may be required.
- Must be able and willing to work in an industrial site setting with adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise, and heavy traffic
- FLSA Status: This position is overtime-eligible.
