    OVERVIEW

    Kitsap County is seeking dynamic and motivated interns for a one-of-a-kind opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of construction management for summer 2026. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience in managing roadway capital projects, working alongside industry professionals to observe, learn, and contribute to the delivery of critical public infrastructure. You will gain exposure to local, state, and federally funded projects and deepen your understanding of roadway construction from planning to completion.

    As an intern, you’ll be actively involved in the entire lifecycle of construction management, from project inspections to learning the intricacies of roadway design. Whether you're recording data, assisting with job site inspections, or engaging with construction teams, this internship offers a comprehensive experience that prepares you for a rewarding career in construction management or civil engineering. You'll also get the opportunity to attend weekly progress meetings with contractors and project managers, ensuring that you have a front-row seat to real-world decision-making processes that influence project outcomes. Not only will you gain essential technical skills, but you’ll also make a direct impact on the community by contributing to the development and maintenance of public infrastructure.

    This Internship Will:
    • Help you develop a thorough understanding of roadway construction and project delivery processes.
    • Expose you to real-world applications of construction plans, specifications, and project coordination.
    • Give you the chance to witness the implementation of safety practices and construction processes on job sites.
    • Allow you to gain experience in data collection, measurement, and reporting as part of the inspection process.

    As a Construction Management Intern, you will:
    • Participate in Job Site Inspections: Join the construction management team on-site to observe and document construction activities. Learn how to read plans and perform inspections of roadway capital work with guidance.
    • Assist in Project Documentation: Help record data, track project progress, and maintain construction-related paperwork such as tickets, equipment usage, and personnel tracking.
    • Engage in Weekly Project Meetings: Attend and contribute to progress meetings with project managers, contractors, and engineers, where you’ll gain insight into how local, state, and federally funded roadway projects are managed.
    • Assist with Construction and Survey Activities: Work with survey teams during staking activities and assist with reviewing the construction process across multiple projects.
    • Learn Job Site Safety: Walk job sites and learn about essential safety practices by working alongside seasoned inspectors and using proper PPE.
    • Support Construction Plan Development: Participate in discussions with engineering and construction staff, helping to review and understand construction plans and specifications.

    Qualifications:

    What you bring:
    • Educational Credentials:
      • Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field of study OR
      • Post-graduate eligibility:
        • Graduated within the last 6 months from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field OR
        • Graduated and continued to a related higher education program.
    • Technical/Industry Background: Familiarity with roadway construction or a strong interest in learning about construction processes, plans, and specifications.
    • Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with construction teams and project managers.
    • Additional Preferred Qualifications: Previous coursework or practical experience related to construction or engineering; knowledge of safety protocols and regulations is a plus.

      • Pass all job-related examinations/tests necessary to demonstrate required knowledge, skills and abilities, as determined by the hiring authority at time of job posting.

    • Driving Requirements
      • The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment. The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy. This position is categorized as:
        • Category 1: Driver operates County-owned vehicle.
    • Supervision:
      • Intern will receive supervision from an administrative superior as assigned.
      • Work is performed in accordance with established policies and accepted practices.
      • Work is reviewed through status reports, meeting and observations.

    • Work hours for this position are 8:00 - 4:30, 20-30 hours per week.
