JOB SUMMARYThe Parks/Facilities Worker supports the City’s mission by operating light and medium equipment to maintain, enhance, and repair parks, recreation facilities, and designated downtown areas. It contributes to the stewardship of more than 2,600 acres of public parks and open spaces through skilled grounds, facility, and athletic field maintenance. The position also plays a key role in park construction and renovation projects and supports community engagement by assisting with special event setup.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Maintain lawns, turf areas, and landscaped spaces to ensure a clean and safe environment.
- Remove trash and debris from grounds and clean public restroom facilities.
- Operate light and medium maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, bucket trucks, and chippers, as well as power tools including chain saws, weed eaters, welders, and graffiti removal equipment.
- Apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers as needed for landscape care.
- Participate in soil and turf management practices.
- Perform maintenance, construction, and repair of park buildings, structures, and related public facilities.
- Assist with plumbing repairs and installation of irrigation systems.
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields for scheduled activities.
- Support City-sponsored events by assisting with setup of tents, tables, and chairs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental goals.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of parks/grounds maintenance and/or other related experience (construction or repair).
- Three (3) years of experience operating light to medium equipment.
- Valid Texas Driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Knowledge of maintenance documentation and repair manuals to ensure accurate interpretation and application.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication to convey information clearly and maintain positive working relationships with staff, vendors, and the public.
- Ability to work collaboratively under general supervision while exercising sound judgment and accountability for assigned tasks.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds frequently. Subject to standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, bending, twisting, balancing, vision, hearing, talking and foot controls frequently; fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching and climbing occasionally; sitting and crawling rarely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Working conditions involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, machinery with moving parts, hazardous materials/ chemicals, and infectious diseases is involved; utilizes personal protective equipment as necessary.
