    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Executive Director of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide range of skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work. This role functions as a skilled generalist, utilizing journey-level expertise in one or more trades such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or carpentry. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining facilities, infrastructure, and utility systems to ensure a safe, functional, and efficient environment for research and learning.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation work across multiple trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry)
    • Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair building systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water, and utility systems
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and system issues using building automation and computerized maintenance systems
    • Respond to emergency repair needs to prevent equipment failure, damage, or safety hazards
    • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations
    • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical specifications
    • Maintain accurate records of work performed using computerized systems
    • Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles such as lifts, forklifts, and maintenance equipment (as certified)
    • Provide guidance and instruction to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants
    • Maintain clean and safe work environments and follow all safety protocols


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
    • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and tools used in one of the skilled trades associated with the HVAC/mechanical, plumbing, electrical or carpentry trades
    • Working knowledge of the materials, methods, equipment and tools used in related trades areas pertaining to facilities, systems including utilities and infrastructure, construction, and renovation
    • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted trade practices in the trade specialty
    • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems
    • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems including building and system level utilities and infrastructure, and renovations
    • Ability to operate construction and related equipment
    • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications, including the ability to make rough sketches
    • Ability to estimate cost, time and materials of assigned maintenance, repair and renovation work
    • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems and to prepare standard reports
    • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift and forklift (as certified) and other equipment and tools required to successfully complete assignments
    • Ability to implement a customer (constituent) service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards and to present work to a wide variety of audiences
    • Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate and perform assigned work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved
    • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments. Work often requires active problem solving and effective interpersonal skills
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere while establishing effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds


    Required Qualifications
    • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program. Requires possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
    • Journey level standing in the HVAC/mechanical trades
    • Knowledge of HVAC/mechanical systems
    • Five (5) years of journey level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction of HVAC/mechanical systems including HVAC and mechanical equipment and controls systems


    Compensation

    Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,274/month - $6,658/month (Step 9 - Step 12)
    CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month (Step 1 - Step 20)
