    The Fort Worth Water Safety Section is seeking a Safety Specialist / Occupational Health & Safety professional to help protect a workforce of more than 1,000 employees operating in water and wastewater treatment plants, construction environments, laboratories, and field operations across the utility. This high-visibility Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) role partners with frontline employees, supervisors, and leadership to strengthen a proactive safety culture, reduce workplace injuries, and ensure compliance with OSHA and other safety regulations.

    The Safety Specialist serves as the subject matter expert for workplace safety, conducting hazard assessments, incident and near-miss investigations, safety training, and safety program development. This role also analyzes injury and safety performance data, develops procedures and work instructions, and collaborates across divisions to improve safety practices. The ideal candidate brings experience in construction safety, utility operations, or environmental health and safety, strong communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to work independently while reinforcing safety standards that protect the employees who maintain Fort Worth's essential drinking water and wastewater infrastructure.

    Additional job information:
    • This is a Full-Time position working 40 hours a week.
    • Work Schedule is Monday - Friday, with the possibility of on-call during emergencies.
    • Primary work location will be at the New City Hall.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Business or Public Administration or related field
    • At least (3) three years of increasingly responsible experience in conducting safety and health audits and/or inspections
    • Valid Driver's license

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • ASP certification or other related certifications. If no certification, must be able to obtain a safety certification within 1 year of hire (ASP, CSP, CHST, CSM etc.)
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
    • Extensive presentation and/or safety training experience
    • Previous incident investigation experience
    • Ability to organize and analyze data


    The Safety Specialist job responsibilities include:
    • Establishes a lead role in key utility-wide safety and environmental health projects, including identifying and planning strategic program needs, leading and training Water personnel, and identifying leading illness, injury, and loss priorities
    • Researches and interprets proposed and existing safety and environmental standards, policies, and practices to determine impact on the utility
    • As directed by management, oversees and conducts divisional safety and health program audits to ensure the consistent implementation of safety and health programs. Tracks and ensures corrective actions are implemented
    • Conducts and provides research into safety training requirements and assists with the development of effective safety and health training. Assists with planning the efficient delivery of value-added safety training throughout the entire utility
    • Conducts in-depth illness, injury, and vehicle incident data analysis and assists with preparing reports
    • Assists with the identification and development of database information and manages data/reporting software systems
    • Leads departmental workgroups in drafting operating procedures and participates in design reviews
    • Represents Fort Worth Water's safety and health interests in peer/community/industry groups
    • Maintains and continually implements federal emergency response plans and assists in coordinating Water emergency response exercises and drills
    • Identifying potential hazards in the workplace through regular inspections, risk assessments, and audits at each center and inspections
    • Conducting thorough investigations into accidents, injuries, and near-misses to determine root causes and prevent recurrence

    Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing and balancing.

    Sedentary Work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

    Medical Program
