    FACILITIES MECHANIC

    THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    This recruitment is open to the public and is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Facilities Mechanic vacancies. The eligible list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

    AIRPORT MAINTENANCE DIVISION

    The Maintenance Division's mission is to ensure safe, clean, and dependable facilities at John Wayne Airport (JWA). The Division manages projects, contracts, maintenance, and general services focused on ensuring a superior guest experience, a safe and secure airport, and optimizing the useful life and reliability of JWA systems, equipment, and facilities in a proactive, cost-effective manner.

    The Division operates 24/7/365 and manages the maintenance and repair of most county-owned and operated facilities, systems, and assets at JWA, including approximately 3.4 million square feet of building space spread over 17 facilities on over 500 acres.

    THE OPPORTUNITY
    The Facilities Mechanic is a multi-trade position responsible for the general maintenance of electrical systems, air conditioning units, structures, and plumbing systems at various John Wayne Airports buildings and facilities. Facilities Mechanics possess knowledge of multiple trades to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical, HVAC, structural, and plumbing issues, carpentry, welding, and other related repairs. Incumbents in these positions generally work independently and with minimal supervision.

    The Facilities Mechanic will be responsible for:
    • Troubleshooting electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, mechanical, or other systems and performing minor to moderate repairs
    • Performing carpentry duties, such as repairs to doors, walls, and ceilings, and installing related hardware
    • Testing electrical circuitry equipment for malfunctions and diagnosing the cause of failure, replacing worn parts if necessary
    • Detecting and locating leaks, blockages, and other issues in plumbing systems, replacing valves, pipelines, faucets, and fixtures, and removing blockages
    • Perform preventive maintenance, diagnose issues, and perform minor repairs on air conditioning units
    • Assisting journey-level tradespersons, such as plumbers, AC mechanics, and electricians, with more complex and time-consuming repairs and maintenance projects

    WORK HOURS


    John Wayne Airport anticipates a 4/10 schedule (4 days a week/10-hour days) for the Facilities Mechanic, and the shifts for the position filled with this recruitment will be similar to the following:

    • Day Shift 05:00 AM-03:30 PM
    • Swing Shift 12:30 PM-11:00 PM; and
    • Night Shift 08:00 PM-06:30 AM

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

    The ideal candidate will have four (4) or more years of skilled or semi-skilled trades experience in either electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, or carpentry. The most successful candidate's experience will demonstrate hands-on work in industrial and commercial, nonresidential settings.

    Although not required, a certification in one or more trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, or HVAC) is highly desirable.

    Additionally, the successful candidate must possess the following core competencies:

    TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
    • Ability to demonstrate general knowledge and skill in a functional specialty and remain current in the area of electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, mechanical, carpentry, and related repairs
    • Methods, tools, and materials of the various building trades in commercial, institutional, and industrial settings
    • Understanding of codes pertinent to the repair of buildings, building facilities, and related equipment
    • Performs a variety of building maintenance and repair work in the electrical, mechanical, carpentry, and plumbing trades
    • Skillfully use standard hand and power tools of a variety of building trades
    • Diagnose the cause of electrical, mechanical, and structural problems and determine the appropriate course of action
    • Make safe, skillful repairs to electrical and mechanical systems and structural facilities; adjust rapidly to new situations warranting attention and resolution
    • Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
    EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
    • Ability to work positively and effectively to resolve issues and encourage collaboration
    • Ability to represent the organization effectively and communicate articulately
    • Maintain cooperative relationships and deal tactfully within and across organizational lines
    • Maintain positive and professional responses during all work periods
    • Deliver technical and conceptual information clearly and articulately, both orally and in writing
    ANALYTICAL SKILLS
    • Ability to use sound reasoning skills to identify and analyze problems by gathering relevant information and considering a broad range of issues related to facilities and maintenance.
    • Capability in evaluating and anticipating resources necessary to create long-term maintenance plans.
    • Ability to continually assess facility conditions to ensure efficient and effective operations and customer service.
    ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents assigned to John Wayne Airport will have frequent exposure to all types of weather, including extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Constant exposure to aircraft noise, high-pitched noises, fumes and orders, and other airport-related conditions. The Airport Maintenance Division operates 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Employees must be able to work various shifts.

    LICENSE REQUIRED
    The successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment.

    AIRPORT ACCESS REQUIREMENTS
    The successful candidate must clear a background check which includes a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Security Threat Assessment (STA). Airport Access Badge must be maintained and renewed every two (2) years.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS
