Parking Community Service Specialist - Transportation & Parking Services

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Parking & Events, the Community Service Specialist I is responsible for patrolling the campus on foot and/or by vehicle to provide enforcement of campus parking rules and regulations, including issuing citations; immobilizing and impounding vehicles; directing traffic and assisting police with traffic accidents and emergency calls for services; and providing parking information and general university information to visitors, students, staff and faculty. Day-to-day work is performed independently under general supervision with closer supervision for new or more complex/sensitive assignments.

This position works a 4/10 schedule, Thursday through Sunday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm

Department Summary

Under the administration of the Assistant Vice President of Public Safety/Chief of Police, the Public Safety Unit is responsible for the safety, health and well-being of the university community. The Public Safety Unit consists of four divisions; Cal Poly Police, Department of Emergency management (DEM), Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) and Business Services. The mission of the unit is to promote a safe and secure learning environment by maintaining order, enforcing laws, providing professional police, emergency response, parking, and access services.

Key Qualifications

• Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
• Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to federal, state and campus policies, affecting public safety, and parking operations, and campus security.
• Ability to verbally convey clear and precise communications, directions and commands; and ability to observe and to respond appropriately to resolve parking and traffic conflicts or problems using reasonable judgment.
• Ability to observe and recall details and incidents, as well as detect and respond appropriately to potentially hazardous situations or crime situations.
• Knowledge of and the ability to learn how to use the applicable public safety related equipment and systems, including alarm and radio systems.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent and three months of related experience.

Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:

• Possession of a valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain by the date of hire.
• Ability upon hire to obtain certification for authorization to access the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System via training by UPD.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $41,532 - $49,644 per year

Classification Range: $41,532 - $60,516 per year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
