BASIC FUNCTION :The person selected will be expected to:
- Organize and teach all levels of a lower-division English program.
- Prepare complete course syllabus and outlines.
- Work with the English Department to develop and maintain a relevant community college curriculum, and assist in facilitating appropriate transfer/articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities.
- Develop and assess Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
- Facilitate student learning by working to develop every student’s abilities and by designing varied learning environments, which may include laboratory, distance learning (interactive television, online), and accelerated courses.
- Teach courses as assigned to meet student needs, which may include day, evening, and weekend classes.
- Work with staff in related academic programs, including the College Success Center and Writing and Language Development Center.
- Participate in department, division, and college-wide initiatives and committees.
- Be committed to, and participate in, the shared governance process.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Essential Duties Summary Required Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : The successful candidate, by the final filing date, must possess the minimum qualifications for instructors in English as governed by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office:
Master’s in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition
OR - Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL , speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR
- Possess a California Community College life credential in the subject matter area of English.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS : Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Previous experience in teaching composition, grammar, reading, critical thinking, and literature courses successfully.
- Understanding of the needs of students at all levels of English courses as they relate to the mission of the Yuba Community College District.
- Knowledge and/or experience in related academic disciplines.
- Experience supervising and/or working with diverse student populations.
- Background in the use of technology in the classroom/laboratory setting.
- Previous teaching experience utilizing distribution education (interactive television, online, etc.)
- Experience and knowledge of Writing Center theory, practice, and/or administration.
- Understanding of current trends in composition theory and practice.
- Experience using current scholarship to promote innovation in the classroom.
- Evidence of being an eager, energetic individual with a sincere interest in and the understanding of the needs of the community college student.
- Evidence of possessing the interpersonal skills necessary to develop rapport with students and staff.
- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing with students and colleagues
- Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
