    Summary

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
    Deschutes County Solid Waste keeps our communities clean, safe, and healthy by managing the county’s solid waste from drop-off to final disposal. We operate Knott Landfill in Bend and four rural transfer stations where residents, contractors, and haulers bring materials for consolidation and transport to Knott Landfill. Our team runs these facilities to the highest operating and regulatory standards, with a constant focus on safety, environmental protection, and customer service.

    ABOUT THE JOB:
    The Landfill Engineering Technician supports environmental compliance by monitoring landfill gas, groundwater, and leachate systems; using specialized monitoring and surveying equipment; inspecting waste loads and site conditions; and maintaining accurate field data. The role also supports facility safety through regular inspections and safety committee participation.

    This position works a Monday to Thursday, 10-hour workdays. Must be able to work additional hours and a flexible schedule when needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet the needs of the department and emergencies.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Monitors landfill gas, groundwater, and leachate systems at County landfill and transfer sites according to established environmental monitoring plans and schedules. Collect samples for testing.
    • Performs inspections of landfill and transfer sites checking for erosion problems, vectors, condition of landfill cover, and other compliance and monitoring plan requirements.
    • The use of highly specialized monitoring equipment and or field engineering instruments, GPS-based field surveying equipment, and CAD software.
    What You Will Bring:
    Knowledge of or experience with:
    • The use of highly specialized monitoring equipment and or field engineering instruments.
    • The skill to accurately record data and maintain exact, detailed records, operate a personal computer, and keyboard/input accurate data into a database system.
    • Creativity, and have strong mechanical and advanced math skills.
    Skill in:
    • The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • The ability to perform problem analysis, use basic computer programming, read blueprints, and to plan, coordinate and prioritize work assignments.

    Compensation

    $5,581.99 to $7,124.30 per month for a 173.33-hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Associate’s degree in civil or environmental engineering or related field;
    • AND one (1) year of experience performing environmental monitoring and testing;
    • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
    Preferred Qualifications :

    Necessary Special Requirements

    Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

    Must have dependable transportation and be able and willing to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.

    Physical Requirements

    Must have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry; arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment. The position is frequently required to sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and lift up to 10 pounds.

    When Are you Eligible:
    If you are hired on the first business day of the month, your benefits will start on the first of that month (immediate benefits, either that day or back to the first of the month if the first is on a Saturday or Sunday). If you are hired after the first business day of the month, your benefits will start on the first day of the following month.
