The City of Newport Beach Fire Department (NBFD) is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as a Firefighter Paramedic! NBFD provides fire protection, EMS, and life safety services to our community. We protect a city of 85,000 residents that grows to more than 100,000 individuals with summer tourism. The NBFD prides itself on its ability to handle all types of emergencies within our city while still providing mutual aid to major incidents across the state. Our Paramedics deliver door to door service and provide the highest quality medical care possible.
SELECTION COMPONENTS
Application Evaluation:

Required Documents to Attach to the Online Application
1) High school diploma/GED or college degree (transcripts showing equivalency will be accepted). 2) Firefighter I certification from a California Office of the Fire Marshal State Fire Training, proof of successful completion from a California Office of the Fire Marshal State Fire Training accredited Firefighter I Academy, IFSAC Firefighter 1 certificate, or Pro Board Firefighter 1 certificate. 3) California EMT-Paramedic License, National Registry EMT-Paramedic License, or completion of a paramedic program (proof must be provided on official letterhead by the school). 4) Driver's license. 5) Basic Life Support (CPR) for Healthcare Provider card. 6) CPAT or Biddle PAT certification. Certification must have been obtained between May 2025 - present. Candidates who do not submit the six required documents with their online application will be disqualified during the application screening and will not be allowed to continue in the process.
Recruitment Timeline
Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review of applications on May 29, 2026. Online Exam: Application packages that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to an online exam tentatively scheduled for June 15, 2026. Top scoring candidates will be invited to an oral interview. Oral Interview: Tentatively scheduled on June 30, 2026. Passing candidates will be invited to the ocean swim test.
Ocean Swim Test: Tentatively scheduled for the week of July 6, 2026. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
Those applicants with disabilities requiring reasonable accommodation for any portion of the testing process must notify the Human Resources Department at least five days in advance of the test.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
A t the conclusion of the testing process, successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list. Top candidates may receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon a background investigation, and psychological and medical examinations (including urine drug screen by City selected medical professionals). C andidates will undergo an extensive background process including polygraph, criminal history, driving record, military history, civil records check, past & current employers, drug & alcohol abuse, education, and reference contacts. Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation may proceed to a Fire Chief's oral interview. After all elements of the testing process have concluded and the eligibility list is established, veterans shall have preference over other identically qualified applicants for appointment to an entry-level position in the City.

The Council consists of the Mayor and six other members and is responsible for policy-making, passing local ordinances, adopting the budget, appointing committees and hiring the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
