DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Plans, coordinates and directs the activities of employees who are engaged in repairing and maintaining the water distribution lines. Monitors work assignments for accuracy and adherence to pertinent legal, technical, contractual, and procedural guidelines. Ensures employees have adequate work supplies, properly functioning equipment, and training in order to perform assigned tasks. Analyze and resolve staff, equipment and operating problems. Responds to citizen’s complaints and inquiries. Gives technical or procedural advice to personnel concerning special or unique problems. Compiles reports and maintains records of services rendered, work performed, and procedures completed. Maintains files on maintenance matters and reports compliance with/or progress toward the Service Line and/or Branch performance measures. Coordinates activities within section, other sections and Service Lines of the department and cooperates with interested agencies or committees. Maintains current knowledge of technological advances, changes in statutes and impact of long-range planning objectives. Analyzes methods and operations and recommends improvements. Makes recommendations for capital facilities. Completes performance appraisals, recommends personnel policies and procedures. Other duties may include preparing daily routes for repair/maintenance teams, making field investigations, scheduling equipment maintenance, and ordering material.
WORKING CONDITIONS May require working in all types of weather and dusty, noisy environments. Some physical exertion such as climbing ladders and lifting objects up to 40 pounds. The individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier I Level.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Five years of experience closely related to the activities of the section are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving.
PREFERENCESPreference will be given to candidates with
- five or more years of knowledge and/or experience in water utility operations, asset management, and operating moderately complex equipment in utility easements
- strong verbal and written communication skills
- experience supervising employees.
- experience and demonstrated skills in Microsoft (Word, Excel & Outlook), GEOLINKS, MYCOH, and IPS (INFOR) or similar work order management software.
- a Water Distribution B or Water license or the ability to acquire a license within twenty-four (24) months of hire/promotion.
