Position Summary:
Assists surgeons throughout surgery as a member of the surgical team. Duties include anticipating the surgeon's needs for procedures and instruments, maintaining sterility and transporting patients.

Job Requirement

Education/Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and graduation from an accredited program for surgical technologist or completed a training program administered by the United States Public Health Service, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Certified Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accepted by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Additional Position Requirements

Preferences will be given to applicants who document the following:

  • Minimum two (2) years recent (within the past five (5) years) acute care surgical tech in the following areas: OR, PACU, ASU, Trauma experience
  • The ability and flexibility to workdays, evenings, night shifts, and/or weekends as required by the needs of the department and the available shift at hire


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of:
Anatomy and physiology; microbiology; pharmacology; medical-legal considerations involved in patient care; infection control and sterilization procedures; surgical equipment, instruments and supplies; methods for draping patients; proper lifting techniques; environmental safety principles and procedures; variety of surgical techniques; body mechanics; a variety of equipment, varying according to specialty (video systems, lithotripter (ESWL & EHL), YAG, carbon dioxide lasers and x-rays); department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and procedures; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures; age specific patient care practices.
Skill in:
Operating room procedures; setting up and restocking operating room; surgical procedures; identifying patient emergency situations and instituting proper response procedures; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, strength to examine varied patients, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Pension Retirement Plan Fully Paid by UMC!
UMC pays the full contribution (28%) of your base pay each pay period into the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS).

No Social Security Tax Withdrawal

Consolidated Annual Leave (Paid Time Off)
27 days of paid time off per year! Full- and part-time employees begin accruing CAL time immediately based on the number of hours worked. CAL time is used for vacation, holidays, sick and personal time off.

Extended Illness Bank (EIB)
To be used for employee hospitalization, or illness that results in an absence of more than 16 consecutive work hours.
