This position requires authority, integrity, and a commitment to upholding the rules of incarceration while protecting the welfare of inmates.Distinguishing CharacteristicsCorrectional Officer I – Entry‑level, supervised learning of inmate care, custody, and confinement. Focus on basic duties with close supervision.Correctional Officer II – Fully‑qualified, performs all duties independently, exercises higher discretion and judgment, and may act as Shift Officer in Charge when directed.Example DutiesReceive, book, fingerprint, and photograph inmates; record personal property.Confine and release inmates from cells; monitor inmate activities.Operate County vehicles to transport inmates to medical facilities, courts, and other locations.Supervise inmates on work details inside and outside the facility.Patrol internal and external perimeters and inspect conditions.Enforce rules and regulations, investigate incidents, and report findings.Operate radios, telephones, and other communication equipment.Prepare required records and reports for period of commitment.Attend state‑mandated training to maintain correctional officer certificates.Minimum QualificationsCorrectional Officer I – High‑school diploma or equivalent; aptitude for correctional work; ability to follow oral and written instructions; effective communication; ability to work under stressful conditions; maintain accurate records.Correctional Officer II – All I qualifications plus knowledge of human relations, inmate behavior, disciplinary, security and emergency policies, use of firearms and defensive equipment; supervisory skills; mandatory self‑defense proficiency.Training and ExperienceHigh‑school diploma or equivalent.Correctional Officer I – Completion of the Adult Corrections Officer CORE course within one year of employment.Correctional Officer II – One year of experience as a Correctional Officer I, completion of CORE and Penal Code 832 Laws of Arrest and Firearms certification within one year of advancement.Special RequirementsSuccessful completion of a thorough Sheriff's Department background investigation.Eligibility to possess firearms.Valid California driver's license.Completion of Physical Agility Test (PAT) to advance to written examination.Physical DemandsStand, walk, climb stairs/ladders, and perform manual tasks such as moving objects over 100 lbs.Operate heavy equipment and restrain prisoners.Verify hearing and vision requirements; use office equipment.BenefitsHealth, dental, and vision insurance.CalPERS retirement participation (per county policy).Paid holidays and sick leave.Uniform allowance and other standard county benefits.#J-18808-Ljbffr
